| I'm interested in building a 1911 and would like some advice on parts. The Patriot class boast a 1911 thats ultra reliable and worth about 3500.00. I want to use the gun as a carry gun, blued, no frills, ultra reliable. |
If you wanted a 1911 that's super ultra reliable - IMO I wouldn't carry a gun I built as a first timer... There is just so much to know about parts, fitting, and just the platform in general. If I had that kind of coin? I'd just get a high end 1911! Personally for your situation and budget, I'd go with a 1911 from: (in no particular order) Les Baer Ed Brown Miller custom Wilson combat Springfield pro Novak Cylinder and slide For the most part, these guns are cheaper than 3500 as well... The Les Baer Thunder ranch special might be your ticket- it as a calling for a well priced awesome gun, but if it was MY money, I'd go Miller custom (It's what I did!) Get the gun exactly how you want it- from an honest man that's an excellent smith. For like 2500 you can get a sex machine of a pistol from him. IM me if you want to know more about that. Either way, ALL those guns are great- and there are a few other custom smiths that all have great products. IMO after you get over the 2k mark with 1911's, you're in the 'AWEESOMEEE' range. |
| I currently use a Glock model 17 as a carry gun, its sort of aging but is still reliable. I have several glocks a model 22, a model 21 and a model 34. I've always liked 1911 but have been talked out of using them as a carry gun. I have a friend thats currently stationed in Iraq and talking with him about 1911's has changed my mind. |

IMO dude, The 1911 answers 'the question'. Most shots on target, in the least amount of time. Almost any high grade 1911 will absolutely match the reliability of a glock- not to mention the shootability factor.. Pick up someone's 1911, a good one, and I gaurantee you your groups will be better. All they require is to be lubed, good mags, and ammo that doesn't blow, and you'll know why some people don't really care for Gaston's design. Trust me... shoot one, you'll see. They aren't as finicky as some say they are when you get a good one. From the experiences of a lot of the 1911 shooters here, sure a glock pretty much does the job, and a lot of guys can work around it's flaws, but once you put a high end 1911 in their hands you see increase performance. The accuracy difference is noticeable- the groups are indeed smaller. IMO the only plastic guns I'd take over a 1911? HK45- maybe. and the MP45 with the performance center trigger job- Johnwayne777 is an advocate of that system, and I will trust his word on it. But a High end 1911 is better than a production 1911, and some say in terms of handguns, it can't be beat. |
| Practice and training......i shoot the same groups with my Glocks as my 1911's...albeit the glocks were a little harder...but a little practice and my $600 glocks groups, match my way more $$$ 1911 groups. Handguns are the most personal preference tool imaginable......what works for me wont work for everyone. I wanna be able to pick up any pistol and do well with it within 20 rounds....it takes time. I am not disresepecting any platform. But my heart belongs to my 1911's and Glocks....with my CZ a close second. |
