I have a 380 llama which is essntially a miniature 1911, and it has an issue with the slide occasionally locking back on a partially loaded magazine when firing.  The magazines work fine in my other 380 llama, the only real difference between the two pistols is the one with the lockback issue has an extended slide release.

I know that occasionally 1911's have a similar issue, but I wasn't sure what the exact cause or solution is.  Should I just replace the extended slide release with a standard one?  I am wondering if either the recoil of the gun or my grip on the gun (or both) is causing the slide release to engage?

I suspect you are activating the slide lock under recoil. Try a low thumb grip. Or shoot it strong hand only and see if it still does it.

I'll give it a try next time.  First time I shot it, no issues.  Second time is when it occured with the same mags.  Thanks for the tip!

One other thing could be that the bullet itself is contacting the slide lock on the inside of the magwell. This is common with aftermarket slide locks and just needs a file to file for clearance.
