I have been doing some reading and some searches here and at m1911.org to determine what might be a good choice for carry and range mags.   I was going to get either some Wilson 47 series mags or possibly some Chip McCormick Power mags.  They seem to be highly regarded and reliable mags on most guns.  What I have read is that some mags may damage or needlessly wear some alloy frames and parts.  The SW1911PD has the Scandium frame and I am looking to hear about experiences with the above mags in a 1911PD or other mag recommendations.  Thanks.

The problem with non-steel frames is the follower in the magazine.  The flat, split followers can gouge the ramp as the follower "stays in place" via inertia when the gun recoils.

Just use mags with skirted followers and you'll be fine.  I've found the Tripp Research Super 7 mag upgrades are an excellent way to make gouge-proof mags.

Here's some additional info...

A second cause of feed ramp damage is the proverbial "loose follower." We've all seen good-quality factory magazines of the previous generation that would allow the follower to slip forward after the last round has fed. These followers will gouge the feed ramp. The results are exacerbated by a feed-ramp polish that has broken the anodizing. We now have the Wilson Combat (800/955-4856) magazine that not only features a synthetic follower, it routes the bullet more into the chamber than into the feed ramp. In my opinion, the original Commander should be used only with Wilson Combat magazines. It simply makes sense to use a magazine that helps to avoid damage.

ETA:  I have no idea on the effect on Sc frames from S&W.

Thanks Fred.  Thats exactly what I needed to hear.  I had read threads that mentioned this but it did not really sink in until now when you wrote it.   A quick search after revealed more threads and links describing what you just said.  Seems like I should get some CMC Power mags along with the Tripp retrofit.

Wilsons have a polymer follower and are good to go.
ACT-MAG/Novak have a stepped follower that is ok as well
Wolff has mags now as well, that look like an ACT mag with a Wolff spring.

Lots of options. Just avoid the ones with a split type follower.

Just want to add that it's not whether the follower is steel or not that bears consideration, it's whether the follower can slide forward on the last round.  Skirted followers can't, split steel followers can.

Nothing wring with steel followers, just so long as they're skirted.

But, I like the Tripp hybrid steel/polymer followers.  You get steel for the slide hold-open and polymer for a fully skirted follower.

This issue seems to be a little muddy still for me.  NVGdude you mentioned that those that have polymer follwers are ok.  I thought I read somewhere that even some of the polymer ones will cause some wear if they are not skirted or are all polymer followers skirted?  I don't quite know the difference yet but I am slowly learning.  I am now thinking I may just get some of the Tripps Cobra mags that have the right followers as it does not seem to be any cheaper upgrading someone elses mags.  Thoughts?

Just stay away from the McCormick style magazine followers and all will be ok.

U can always order the Tripp Rebuild kits and replace the spring/follower with the new insides.
