Hello gents, Friend and I was at the local toy store and was looing over the 1911's. Friend is looking for a "cost effective" 1911. I have a pretty new Rock Island that has been 100% perfect in every way since I bought it. Must have well over 600 rounds thru it so far. The toy store has the Auto Ord, 1911 on sale this week -- $370 plus tax. Looks pretty good, but not as "smooth" as my new Rock Island. So . . . should my friend try to find a Rock Island or pick up the Auto Ord ? ? I know a SA or Colt or S&W would be a better 1911, but my friend has only so much to spend on his new 1911. And a "cost effective" model is better than no model at all ! So . . . what say you ? ? ? Thanks ! ! |

I'd take a Rock Island Tactical any day! http://i206.photobucket.com/albums/bb141/blbarron/1911/RIATactical017.jpg |
| I wouldn't lie to you. You can also contact me directly at [email protected] with any questions. I don't get on the forums everyday. |
WOW cool, so I got to ask a Hypothetical question????? if I, well maybe not me, had to use his RIA Commander TO beat the skull in on a Feral HOG,then the warranty would still cover it? |
Sorry to hear about your troubles. The RIA pistols are generally quite good for the cost. Only place I see a number of issue is in the compact models. I'd say you either had bad luck or perhaps you're better off with something dishwasher safe. Then again you weren't very descriptive of the issues you had just a general statement of junkness. So it makes it hard to tell. |
The AO had extractor issues out of the box, FTE on every shot...not very hard or expensive to fix but I just lost confidence in it & sold it. The RIA was putting metal in my face. I came home from the range and had to pluck several metal splinters out of my face...I came home bleeding! Again, it was fixable but I didn't have any "warm & fuzzies" for it and sold it off. The AO had a decent fit/finish and was more accurate. The RIA was pretty poor as far as accuracy goes. I still like the 1911 but I've come to the conclusion that they can be money pits. Few and far between can you find a 1911 that can shoot with a Sig 220 or BHP that is in the same price range. |
You base this on your bottom of the barrel 1911s? That is ridiculous. |
He did say 1911's in general could be money pits. Of this, I'll have to agree. |

Another vote for the RIA. I've fed mine nothing but Winchester 230gr FMJ White Box and Federal 230gr Hydra-Shock and love it. No hiccups. Great for practice gun, spare, or even if you can only own one gun and are on a budget. Keep it somewhat clean and use good quality mags, and you'll be happy. That being said, I'm looking at a Kimber Pro Carry for a carry piece, and wouldn't mind having a Springfield Mil-Spec. |
what kinda groups are you getting with that, i've been looking into one |
