Hello gents,

Friend and I was at the local toy store and was looing over the 1911's.  Friend is looking for a "cost effective" 1911.   I have a pretty new Rock Island that has been 100% perfect in every way since I bought it.  Must have well over 600 rounds thru it so far.

The toy store has the Auto Ord, 1911 on sale this week -- $370 plus tax.  Looks pretty good, but not as "smooth" as my new Rock Island.

So . . . should my friend try to find a Rock Island or pick up the Auto Ord ? ?

I know a SA or Colt or S&W would be a better 1911, but my friend has only so much to spend on his new 1911.  And a "cost effective" model is better than no model at all !

So . . . what say you ? ? ?

Thanks ! !

My last experience with auto ord 1911s left me believing RIA to be the superior product.  The AO might possibly be the reason that certain people think 1911's are a reliability concern.

I do not have any experience with AO but my RIA has been flawless with Wolf .45 ball ammo.

Everything I have read says that the RIA is a very good pistol for what it is, and the AO is NOT.

I too like Rock Islands and have turned down a few Auto Ordinances. That said, a friend of mine bought one of the Kahr built GI style AO's and has good luck with it. His feeds Wolf too.

IIRC AOs now have a forged slide and cast receiver.  (I think they used to use cast slides, too.)  I think Rock Island guns have a forged slide and receiver.  I'd take a look at Springfield Armory, too, though.

The RIA's are 4140 cast frame and extruded slide.  We warranty them for life.

I wouldn't lie to you.  You can also contact me directly at [email protected] with any questions.  I don't get on the forums everyday.

Ray will do whatever it takes to make a Rock Island problem go away.  He has a tendency to drop extra mags and stuff in the box whenever someone does have a problem and has to send a pistol in for service.

I've got over 2k through mine and love it.  It came from the factory with Duracoat as a finish, but a nickel sized spot popped off on the front strap.

To RIA's credit they said the warranty covered the finsih and send it in.

Me I'm not that patient so I started sand blasting and spraying and reworking my GI model RIA and ended up with this...  A box from Midway, some sand blasting, some parkerizing, a little work over with matte black GunKote, donated hammer from an old Kimber, a trip to get a front dovetail, etc...

It's been very reliable and while I don't carry it daily, cause I'm much more attached to a different 1911.  I do carry this one at times and trust it completely.

WOW cool, so I got to ask a Hypothetical question?????
if I, well maybe not me, had to use his RIA Commander TO beat the skull in on a Feral HOG,then the warranty would still cover it? because I`m not saying I did,but I MIGHT know someone who did???  TUFF gun tough

Nope you can take a hammer to it just as easy as an other 1911.

But it's a bad idea.

I've had both...and both were junk.

If I every own another 1911, I'll do it right next time and spend enough to get something decent.

My first 1911 experience was with an Auto Ordnance, we bought my father for his birther day some 15 yrs ago.  Many Many thousand rounds later it is still going strong and is his daily carry piece.  I guess he got lucky.

Sorry to hear about your troubles.  The RIA pistols are generally quite good for the cost.  Only place I see a number of issue is in the compact models.  I'd say you either had bad luck or perhaps you're better off with something dishwasher safe.

Then again you weren't very descriptive of the issues you had just a general statement of junkness.  So it makes it hard to tell.

The AO had extractor issues out of the box, FTE on every shot...not very hard or expensive to fix but I just lost confidence in it & sold it.

The RIA was putting metal in my face.  I came home from the range and had to pluck several metal splinters out of my face...I came home bleeding!  Again, it was fixable but I didn't have any "warm & fuzzies" for it and sold it off.

The AO had a decent fit/finish and was more accurate.  The RIA was pretty poor as far as accuracy goes.

I still like the 1911 but I've come to the conclusion that they can be money pits.  Few and far between can you find a 1911 that can shoot with a Sig 220 or BHP that is in the same price range.

DANG!  That's a gem!

I picked up a lightly used 5 in. RIA for $350 that has been flawless.  I intend to sell my P-13. The RIA simply out performs it.

You base this on your bottom of the barrel 1911s?  That is ridiculous.

He did say 1911's in general could be money pits. Of this, I'll have to agree.

Another vote for the RIA. I've fed mine nothing but Winchester 230gr FMJ White Box and Federal 230gr Hydra-Shock and love it. No hiccups. Great for practice gun, spare, or even if you can only own one gun and are on a budget. Keep it somewhat clean and use good quality mags, and you'll be happy.

That being said, I'm looking at a Kimber Pro Carry for a carry piece, and wouldn't mind having a Springfield Mil-Spec.

Since I have two of them, and they have performed perfectly, I have to say RIA.
