so, one of my co workers really wants to buy a 1911. He is looking at a Kimber Custom Classic fore $769(new gun) but he wants to change out the grips, do a trigger job, possibly extended levers, whatever.... Also there is a Kimber Custom Classic at the shop that is used, looks nice, has a nice trigger, but it has a compensator on it and a really, really stiff recoil spring. I am thinking it might have been a bowling pin gun!

I was thinking maybe he should get a Spartan for like $600 and modify that. I've never heard of any complaints with them, just that they needed a good mag.

I would think toss some wood grips and a C-S trigger package, and a different trigger on it and you would have a hell of a nice gun!

Maybe upgrade the front sight as well.

Your thoughts?

For the money I dont think you can touch it with any other gun.........not within about 400$ more....

I replaced the trigger group with SVI/Infinity stuff and he said the stuff he took out was better!  Hows that for a 575$ gun!

shoot well and god bless

I picked up a Spartan a few weeks ago and I couldn't be happier.  I think you'll have a hard time finding anything that shoots any better for less than $1000.  It's a terrific deal at msrp.

+1.  All I changed on my Spartan were the stocks (stock rosewood for black double diamond rubber) and the FLGR (swapped to a GI unit).  It's more accurate than my Glock or Taurus 24/7 and it has a great trigger.

The trigger parts are already STI, why change them?  The front fiber optic sight also jumps out at you.  It's very quick to pickup in daylight.

The only problems I've had were directly related to my own reloads (too short!).  I'm using the stock Novak, 7 and 8 round Checkmates, and some Nighthawk mags (same as the Novak).

I am somewhat new to 1911's but have the opportunity to see and shoot many of them. From what I have seen (and I admit this is limited), I was thinking the very same thing. It seems much nicer than anything even close to it in price. I think next step up is a Springfield Loaded maybe?

I've been told no MIM (but it does have a synthetic trigger). Anyone know if this is true?

The Spartan is made by Armscor.....they also build RIA 1911's.  So it's pretty much another iteration of what you'd see from the Filipino company that's starting to gain a following

Armscorp provides the frame, slide and barrel for the Spartan but it is finished and assembled by STI, using their own parts. A vast difference to "made by Armscorp". I am not putting down Armscorp either, as I own a RIA that is a fantastic pistol. I think that I need to get a Spartan myself.

Ack, thanks for the correction.

Incorrect.

All construction, including final fitting and finishing, of the STI Spartan is handled in the Philippines.

What sets it apart are STI supplied internals (I have a list around here somewhere, but the primary is the FCG), and the fact that it is assembled and fitted in a special line under specific supervision at the Armscor facility.

Final QC is done in the states by STI.

Maybe, but they are still 100% built in the Phillipines.

I've had a half dozen "loaded" springers over the past few years...the finish was nicer than the spartan on all of them but only one came close to the performance and it had a fitted bushing and a trigger job.

(I'm not ragging on the springers...I like them a lot and they remain a great value....the TRP is awesome)
