do you guys load 8 rounds or 7 rounds in them for easier seating when the slide is closed?

8.

I've never had/seen an issue with topping out any mag and seating on a closed slide/bolt/whatever.

A friend once claimed his (not a 1911 so I won't bring it up) would not accept a fully loaded mag with slide closed...    I ran a few shots off and did four "tactical" reloads without a hitch....  I called him a few embarrassing names afterward

Practice it like you mean it, someday, it might mean everything

ten-four, good to know how other people go about it.  its not a huge deal as they WILL go in if you slam them in, i just dont like slamming magazines into my beloved 1911, im used to babying all my guns.  i guess it wouldnt have come with an 2 8 round mags if they werent meant to be utilized tho

I keep 8 rd wilson mags fully loaded in my 1911 in the safe all the time and ive only had one wilson mag bind up , it wasnt broken in and it still didnt cause a malf. the follower just didnt come all the way up to the top for awhile but it works like its supposed now after a few range sessions.

I previously filled my 8-rounders with 8, but lately have gone to 7.  I have a specific personal reason for downloading all of my mags at present, and it has nothing to do with reliability or round count.

Why, you ask?  During dry practice last week, I had about a dozen reps of slamming full 8-rounders into my Commander.  They took much more force to seat.  Additionally, the pressure applied to the mag catch caused it to require much more pressure to release the mags.  That's not the real reason, though, but I want to explain why I was seating them so hard.  I suspect the mag funnels in my full-size 1911s cushion the blow a little bit, but the Colt just has a beveled well.  It's never been a problem before, including a Front Sight class and a fair amount of prior dry practice, lest you think I have nancy-boy hands.

Due to how I held & seated the mags, I'm now the lucky recipient of a (hopefully temporary) ulnar nerve injury.  It doesn't affect my work - can still intubate/start IVs/epidurals/etc.  It does, however, hurt like the hammers of hell if anything touches that part of my hand.  In speaking with an orthopedic surgeon tonight, we'll watch it & hope it goes away.  If not, there could be surgery in the future.  Downloading 1 round leaves a little give in the spring, cushioning the blow to the hand.

For the present time, I'd rather retain use of my hand and sacrifice the 3 extra .45 rounds (1 in gun & each spare).

Why yes, I do think you have nancy boy hands....

That is one of the best reasons I've ever heard of for downloading mags.  Hope everything works out for the best.

My old Detonics Combat Master sometimes needs an extra bump to get my Chip McCormick 8-rounder to feed the 1st round out of the mag.  Other than that, it feeds 100%.  Not bad for such a short 1911-style pistol!
