| My father recently purchased a used Kimber 1911 Classic Stainless Gold Match and we noticed the thumb safety does not stop the hammer from falling when the trigger is pressed and the thumb safety is in the up/'safe' position. Any idea what would cause this? Is this something I could fix myself or should I have a gunsmith do it? I tried using the search option but could not find the answer I was looking for. I am not familiar with the 1911 platform, but I am mechanically inclined. Any help would be appreciated, thanks. |

Send it to a reputable 1911 pistolsmith, the thumb safety is not working properly(obviously) and the gun should be looked at by a pro. This malfunction is most likely due to some gunsmith performing modifications to the pistol without being qualified to do so, it could also be the work of the dreaded dremel jockey(home gunsmith). You can find links for reputable smiths at the top of this forum, or just send it back to Kimber. Kimber's custom shop isn't where I'd send the gun for a full house custom job, but I've used them for warranty repairs on my Custom II, and they performed the work, and then some, and turn around was about 10 days. Don't load or fire the pistol, whoever messed up the thumb safety could have also messed with other parts. ETA Not all gunsmiths are pistolsmiths, and not all pistolsmiths are 1911 smiths. |
| Well, I finally received my parts form Cylinder and Slide,(actually only took a couple days-excellent service), and put my pistol into working order again. I replaced the thumb safety and now it works like a charm. I also bought a drop-in hammer/sear/etc. parts kit,but I think I just may return it to C&S. I was going to use the drop in kit, but the sear pin hole is smaller than the pin itself and I don't want to mess with it,especially now that the pistol seems to only have needed a new hammer. I wondered if it was because of the MIM parts, thanks for the input. |
