I am currently in the market for a 1911. I'm looking in the $300-$500 range, it's gonna be a plinker so quality isn't that important (I'm seriously considering RIA, as the quality sounds good for the money) I was also thinking about doing a home build. Are there any kits you can buy that will have everything in it? I know that I'll have to get the frame a dealer or have it shipped FFL, but that isn't that big of a deal. Also, would I even save money by doing a home build, or would it be better to just buy it?
You may want to think about a taurus PT1911 too. Taurus gets a bad rap because they are not an american company (brazilian). They make some good guns though and they price is right to. The base line PT1911 usually start around $500 but you can find them cheaper at gun shoes most times or get a used one. I picked a brand new ine up 3 years ago for $460. It rarely jams, it will shoot any ammo out there too. It doesn't have the fit and finish of my Kimber Covert but it cost have as much.
The top end of your price range puts you in the bottom end of Springfield Armory territory. These guns get respect from custom builders as being a good base gun (meaning their quality is above many others) and SA carries a lifetime warranty and gets great marks for customer service. Worth serious consideration!
I am gonna play the opposite and steer you away from Taurus products. I own a taurus auto and from this point on, I will not be buying their products. My friend and I both had lousy experiences with their service. It was slow and inefficient. My advice would be to skip the Taurus and pick up a Springfield Mil-Spec and customize it slowly to your liking. |
Your defintly right about there slow customer service. And there low end semi autos in my opinion suck. Something that most people don't know is that they were just awarded limited contracts for the 24/7 OSS Combat. They should be up for sale soon. But anyway back to the subject. Like I said there 1911s work and if your on a budget thats all that matters.
Im ok with buying a used gun, but if i do, i would want a warranty. id rather pay the $20 and not have a problem then not pay for a warranty and get screwed. Im also thinking of getting a 22 conversion for those days where i feel like being cheap! is there any gun i should lean more towards because of that or doesnt it matter?
