Just bought a used but in nice shape blued finish Delta Elite, appears to be 1st gen, but I am not sure how to tell for sure..  what ammo is safe to shoot out of this?

I have heard stories that they could not take the +p ammo, and I sure dont want to blow it up!

Where is a good source for 10mm ammo?

First, post pix . . .   . . . and congrats!

Second, have a good smith fit and install a flat-bottomed EGW firing pin stop (FPS).  This increases the leverage required for the slide to cock the hammer (retarding slide velocity a bit), and reduces battering on the gun.  You may also want to order a new standard 1911 guide rod (short) and the appropriate Wolff spring for the DE.

As for 10mm ammo . . . most will recommend Double Tap as your carry ammo.  I think this is sound, but you could use WW Silvertip as well (which is what I have).

You may want to look into "Canned Heat" ammo from Georgia Arms for regular shooting (until you get into reloading).

If you have a solid rail above the slide stop, you  have a first gen.  If you have a piece of the frame rail missing above the slide stop, you have a late model.

Congrats on an excellent purchase!!  I also have one, no compensator.  I use either the WW silvertips previously mentioned or CorBon +P.  It was the "Bren-Ten" that had issues with cracked slides early on.

Never had a single issue with this weapon and it is approaching 20 yrs old....

BTW..  I have a couple of extra "spring kits" to the DE if you need one, lemme know.

This pic will show the difference in 1st and 2nd gen.

Congratulations on getting the Delta!
This one is really gettin' old, but its a great shooter.  I tried a set of Wilson Cocobolas for grins, but they're gone now.
DT loads, Silvertips, CorBons, doesn't matter.  She eats anything!
I run a Wolfe 23# recoil spring and EGW guide rod(the originals are in the safe)

There's never was such a thing as 10mm +P!

ALL original Norma ammo was loaded very hot (35,000 to 44,000 psi, IIRC according to Speer #10 reloading manual), but the gun was designed to handle it.

P.S.- I got a stainless Delta Elite in 1990. Love it! Gonna take it with me when I go! LOL

The Delta Elite was made for speed.  That's what a 10mm is for.  It and other 10mm pistols are the Porsches of the handgun world.  Anyway, I would echo what was said regarding ammo, Double Tap is the best, but the price reflects that.  Georgia Arms/Precision's Canned Heat is good stuff, and it comes with an ammo can.  In a pinch, Miwall is okay as well.

Here's mine after Wilson Combat finished with it:

Damn you, SilverState.  Every time I see your Delta, I can't stop thinking about sending my Delta in for some work.  I can't afford it!!!  Stop it!!!

BTW, your pic is missing from PhotoBucket.
