| I was wondering how much of a pain it would be to install an ambidextrous safety on a Colt Gold Cup Trophy? I think this might be the one that I finally decide on, but I'm left handed when shooting a pistol and this is a deal breaker for me. Thanks for all the help. |

98% of the time ambidextrous safeties are NOT drop-in pieces and require fitting. It should be worth 30 min of your gunsmith's time (and if he charges by the hour, having him fit a backup slide stop is a wise suggestion if I may say so. You will also need a set of grip panels notched to accept the ambi. So, you are looking at at @ $100 for a spare set of panels (if you're not too picky) and the smith's time. That said, the necessity of the ambi comes down to the application of the weapon. If this is for its intended purpose (range use), then an ambi is completely unnecessary. If this is a defensive pistol/CCW, it's a poorer choice than many 1911s tailored to that purpose. The only scenarion that I can envision where the Gold Cup is a favorable choice and the ambi is indispensible is for some sort of "practical" match shooting. I am a lefty and my CCW has a ambi, but most of my 1911s (original condition relics and range toys) have the traditional safety. |
