Hey guys,

I am about to buy a 1911, and I love the original WWII style 1911's.  I have landed on the Springfield Armory GI .45.  I have a few questions though.

Is the lanyard loop easily removeable?
Can I replace the GI sights with the Mil-Spec 3 dot sigths, or even night sites?

Thanks in advance

I'm with you on the A1 series. I love the look of the old-school 1911's. You could buy another main-spring housing that doesn't have the loop on it,I don't know off-hand which company, but maybe MidwayUSA? They should carry ALL the sights you could possibly want, also.

YES Yes and Yes

The lanyard loop is part of the MSH, so that part is easy

The sights can be changed either by swapping out what's on there or by milling the slide to accept dovetailed type.  I figure both are 'smith jobs.

I have heard of folks just swapping sights themselves, but haven't looked into it closely yet.  It cannot be that difficult

I do like the original style 1911. The newer custom features are neat, but I really prefer the old school style.

I bought the mil-spec model instead of the GI model because of the 3-dot sights and some other extras it had over the GI model. Not a true 1911-a1 (flared/lowered ejection isnt the norm with the A1) but it's still worth the money. I did have to send it back however, but we will see what happens.

you can take the lanyard loop off yourself easily if you've got hammer and punch. did it to my SA GI. once you take the mainspring off the gun you should be able to drive out the pin that holds the lanyard loop. only slight downside is that you'll have 2 holes on the bottom of your gun.

Springfield Mil-Spec has three dot sights and no lanyard loop.

Personally, I put lanyard loops on all my 1911s. Come in handy sometimes.

+1  - I swapped the MSH on mine for a standard lanyard ring MSH without the safety lock.  It was easy.

IMO, swapping the front sight isn't a DIY job, but would be easy for a decent smith.

If you want a better trigger pull while preserving the USGI looks, check the Cylinder & Slide Marine Corps Trigger Pull Set .

Doesn't it also have a lowered ejection port?

I've loved my GI.  Now that I'm converting it to an older MEU(SOC) 1911, it has that converted from a WWII pistol look and feel of the 1985 guns.

I haven't shot one but got to handle one. It was all around well built. The only problem I had was the trigger was about 9-10lb. pull. Other than that I liked it and my get one my self.

Have you changed your mind and gotten into the custom 1911 sales?
