good afternoon all,
i am seriously thinking of purchasing a new SW 1911. I'm very attracted to the pd series of scandium framed 1911s, as the only reason i don't always carry my government model springer is that with its beastly steel frame its a tad heavy for all day wear.  I like my commander, but i shoot government length 1911s better, and have no problem using them for ccw. Plus the 100 $ rebate makes it an attractive buy, damn tax return is burning a hole in my wallet.

I am specifically looking at the SW  108293. its the 5" government model. Scandium frame with half length m1913 rail. Im looking at this one b/c of the rail and the melonite finish.

Does anyone here have experience with the scandium framed SWs? call me old school, but I've never owned a 1911 of any kind with anything but steel frames. does the scandium complicate working on the pistols...will I need weird polishing devices and compounds should i decide it needs some polishing? will the frame wear like steel or does it do any odd galling or behave strangely in any other ways?

Has anyone had any "out of the box" issues with SW 1911s?

Also i was wondering how the Melonite finish wears?

Also does anyone know if the sw1911s have any communist mandated internal locking device?  I own several pre-lock SW revolvers, but i would exclude a SW 1911 from my short list if it has an internal lock, unless it is an easily removed and replaced. Fortunately i don't live in an occupied  state so i have this option.

The S&W utilizes a Swartz style firing pin block similar to the one used by Kimber. The Scandium frame is an aluminum alloy and has similar properties to other alloy framed handguns. Those that have them seem to like them.

I would opt out for the Springfield LW Operator over the S&W. It utilizes the originally designed  internal extractor and has no firing pin block. The ILS mainspring lock that it comes with is easily replaced.

thanks man. Yeah I'm familiar with the mainspring ILS. I have a replacement mainspring hoousing for my springer GI, but haven't installed so i can keep it "period" spec.

especially thanks for the info on the Kimber type II firing pin safety system. I did not know thats what they used in SW 1911s and now that i do i know their not for me.  I have a buddy whose got a kimber stainless II and while I've shot it and have no serious complaints i wouldn't want to own a pistol with the schwartz system.
