Eventually I will get a 1911 style pistol. I have held a few and my thumb is too short to press the mag release w/out adjusting the weapon in my hand. My XD has an ambidextrous release that allows me to press the release w/ my trigger finger, which I like and it was one of the selling point for that weapon. I have looked @ Springfield's site and the custom shop offers an ambi release for 1911s, but my question is do any 1911-types come w/ one originally? Or, is it something that has to be installed after the purchase of a gun? |

on a production 1911, no you must add said feature. Full blown custom you can have built your way. they also sell a type of paddle for the magazine release. All you need is a drilled and tapped magazine release, or the ability to do so. You will also need a set of grips the have clearence for the new paddle. |

Your thumb is NOT too short for a 1911 mag release. MOST shooters have to change the grip angle of the weapon in their hand in order to manipulate the release, as is the case with the slide stop/release. The end result is that with the ambidextrous safety, it appears the standard controls actually favor lefties. You do NOT want to add extended releases (slide or mag). They tend to cause more problems while shooting/carrying than they address. |
