Ever run across a gun that you just can't stop thinking about? I just bought an XSE Commander, and while I was there, I looked at a Special Combat, 2-tone series 80. The sticker is $1450, which to me is alot of $$$ but damn, it sure is pretty. Does anyone here own one? or has anybody shot one? are they worth the $$ ??? I doubt I'd even carry it if I bought it, maybe once in a while. I'd hate to have a $1500 safe queen though. Would I be better off with an older Gold Cup? or maybe the Gunsite model? I'm just curious if they really are that great to warrant me shelling out $1500 ???

It really all depends on what you want.

For the money, you can't beat a good Gold Cup National Match.  I have owned a National Match, 2 Trophy's, Combat Elite, and Spec Com Gov.  If you just want a great gun that will drive tacks with little to no tweaking, go with the National Match.  Arguabley one of the best "out of the box" guns Colt has to offer.

I do not consider the SCG to be an "out of the box" gun because you pay for the extra tuning, the only difference is Colt does the work and you pay up front.  The reason I got one of these is this for the sights.  I wanted a really accurate Colt factory gun that wouldn't require too much work to accept some night sights should I decide I want it for carry.  I went through sight issues when I customized one of my Trophy's and found that unless I spent a ton of money, my options were pretty limited to either the Colt adjustible sights, Millett, or Wilson Combat.

I'm sure there is a big difference to how things stack up from a competition stand point.  I really only look at handguns from a defensive stand point and a shooter's stand point.

The reason I was able to take the plunge and pony up the $$$ for the SCG was because I was doing a lot of lurking on the 1911forum.  Opinions vary greatly on Colt models and Colt 1911's in general, but one thing most people agree on is that the SCG is a damn fine pistol.

I just bought a new XSE as well and it is sweet.

I am drooling over the same gun you are.

I have a TRP.  So if I were going to spend 1500 on a new 1911 it would be your Colt.

Given Colt's current QA/QC, I would like to inspect it well before purchasing.  At that price point, you are also looking at a Les Baer Premier II or a Springfield TRP, or a STI Trojan + a case of ammo.

Mine is just fine.

I have handled three SGCs including the one I purchased and all three were fine regarding appearance. Mine is also flawless mechanically and it is very accurate and although I haven't shot it extensively, reliable. I acquired mine by cash and trade-in and it was worth every penny.

.45  I'm waiting for this f*cked up Indiana weather to turn nice for more than a day so I can get this out and shoot it along with my 1991 ORM clone SGC I had built.

1450 is too steep.  Shop around.  I found an Enhanced model a couple of weeks ago for much much less.  I saw a non-enhanced model yesterday at a gun show.  It had the paperwork but no box.  It had the Colt archive data letter with it repoting the DOM as 1981.  I would have rated it at 95%.  The dealer wanted $800.00.  My dad bought it.  He is 67.  He likes Colt's.
