The Springfield.

My S&W has been a nightmare, while my buddies Springfield Loaded has been one of the best 1911s I've ever encountered.

Whats been wrong with the S&W ? Are they going to fix it ?

I know S&W service is pretty decent, at least it was a while ago.

SA, no swartz saftey, no ext extractor.

In MY opinion.
The Smith.
I have both a S&W just like the one pictured and a SA GI two tone model with a black slide and silver frame.
I LOVE the way my smith shoots!!!
SO much so that I have been thinking seriously about getting a S&W 22A instead of the very popular Ruger MkIII.

S&W in my opinion is just better.  I have handled both and Springfield's quality is very good to terrible.  They just no do have all together today, to make it worse Springfield uses cast frames(cheaper) compared th S&W forged and S&W is made in the United States.  For me the Swartz safty system is a non issue, it works.  For me I would take a S&W over a Springfield anyday.

Incorrect.

I have seen some crappy fit & finish on both S&W and Springfield, so that's a wash.  I would stick with SA simply to avoid the external extractor.

Springfield has been using cast frames from Brazil for years.  E-mail them yourself.

Sorry, I believe you are misinformed.

Hi – Thanks for your interest in Springfield Armory.

Here are some answers for your questions.

1. Are all model 1911 frames and slides forged in Brazil?
Yes

2. Which models are completely manufactured and assembled in Brazil?
All GI models.
3. Which models are assembled here in the U.S.?
Most Mil-Spec and all Loaded, TRP and Custom models.
4. Why is it that some examples of a particular model are roll marked “MADE IN BRAZIL-IMBEL” above the serial number while others are devoid of this marking?
Sometimes, due to lack of time, some of the mil-spec and loaded are made in Brazil. That is why they will be marked with that stamp.
Hope this information helps you out. Thanks, Tom

I did better than that, *I* called them.

Just say, "I was wrong" & we'll all move along.

I'm biased as I already own three Springfields: mil-spec, Micro & Trophy NM.

OTOH, I LOVE my S&W wheel guns. No one, and I mean NO ONE makes a better wheel gun.

When I buy a gun, I've learned the hard way to buy one from someone who's been making them for a while. Springfield has been making 1911s a LOT longer than S&W. (Yes, I mean the IL version.)

As an example, I reference the S&W 1911 recalls that have happened. Now, certainly every mfgr has turned out a turd once in a while. But I just feel, see & experience more/better quality when I handle or shoot a Springfield.

If you are planning on carrying it....get the SW1911....much lighter gun.  I don't think you can go wrong with either...they are both nice.

Bingo

I should probably start a new thread about this, but what are the issues with these ?

The external extractor I think I have heard the the argument on, but this Swartz thing is new to me . (isn't that from Spaceballs ? )

I almost think the external extractor detractors just hate it because St. Browning designed the 1911 perfectly from the start, and anything that deviates is blasphemy.

Springfield, the stainless Loaded has a FORGED Frame and Slide. Way better than the SW, a real Series 70 yadda yadda. So long as you dont get a dirt digger(which they fix fast) you cant go wrong IMO with the SA.

Well , I HAVE a SA Champ - so I know it works.

Swartz type of saftey Colt designed around 1930's.  works of the grip saftey.  If not timmed right hammer goes down, gun does not go bang.

Seen it happen on a few Kimbers.  Also the swartz just adds another item to time when fitting a gripsaftey.

I'll take an 80 series saftey over a swartz.  I cant recall a case where someon reported my 80 series is not working.

Neat pic of a Colt Swartz model poor USGI 1942

own both...of the 2, i'd probably opt for a SA again

no worries on the plunger tube or external extractor's potential (but very small chance now); but i do like the non- FP safety of the SA and thier CS
