I have a friend who is looking into getting the GI 45 from Springfield Armory in OD green. He wants it mostly because of looks and because it is not quite as pricey as some of the other 1911s. This will be his first pistol, is it a good choice? HOw reliable are they? Are they fairly accurate? Are there any glaring problems with them? It will be used mostly just for fun plinking, no competition or anything like that. Thanks in advance

I don't know of any current problems with them.  Back when I bought mine (three years ago) they were having some problems with out of spec extractors.  They had to be slightly bent to work reliably.  Mine didn't have the problem and has only had a few hundred rounds though it, but it has been completely reliable and accurate.

Mine runs great, and it was actually my first 1911.

Sights are a little small, though.

A great gun to recreate the GI M1911A1 experience with, warts and all.

Probably the only "cheap" 1911 I would allow in my safe

I love mine. Very accurate. Had some slight problems with Return To Battery, but a 18.5lb Wolff spring and extractor tuning fixed that.

GI will be my next 1911
I love my Loaded, but I want another, more classic set-up.
It will still get attacked with tools and whatnot, just a bit less "tactically motivated"

(if anyone has examples of blued GIs that would be great! )

Only picture I have of mine, it gives you an idea of the finish

Nice collection!

Is the one just below the right case a Springer? ( I can tell the one under it is.)
That really shows the difference b/w parked and blued...

The G.I. is a great gun and perfect for a future "Build". However, based on your description of your friend,; I would recommend a Mil Spec. Only because it has better sights and a couple of other small improvements. This will give him a very good platform to introduce ones self to the 1911. IMHO the G.I. is for someone who wants a "Modern/throw back to the original G.I." or for someone who wants to build a custom. All this being said; I'd have your friend look at the G.I., Mil Spec and Kimber Custom and/or Springfield Loaded. This way he can look and see the difference between "base", "Semi-base" and "Today's version".

We just got one in at my work that is the SA GI stainless.  I was thinking about getting it, I just liked the way it looked.  If I get it, it will be my first 1911...something I have been wanting forever.  I already have a xd and love springfields.  What price should I expect to pay on a ss G.I.?

+1 - I got a Parkerized GI (my first centerfire handgun) because I used 1911A1s in the Army.  Mine functioned 100% out of the box, but I can't leave anything well enough alone. I replaced the MIM parts, and upgraded the trigger, sear, hammer, extractor and firing pin stop.  Now the trigger is much better, and I'm convinced installing an EGW oversized firing pin stop with JMB's original radius reduced muzzle flip.  I've learned a LOT about the 1911 in the process.
