I want a 1911 in the 3 to 4 inch barrel range.  Who makes the most reliable pistol for the best price?

The rule of thumb is to go with the longest barrel length that will acommodate your CCW needs. For me, that means the 4" compact, or the 4.25" CCO/Commander. My experience with the various platforms is that cutting below the 4.25/4.0" length does very little for the concealability of the pistol, but it alters the reliability margin and the ease of shooting dramatically.

Alphaghost has given some good suggestions if your budget can only sustain a production pistol. I went with a more expensive semi-custom after fooling with production pistols (which cost 2-3 times as much) and I am not sorry I did in the least. What you MUST have is a CCW that you KNOW is reliable (which comes from a great deal of shooting), one that you can handle skillfully, and (something many overlook to their detriment) one that will be fun/exciting enough that it commands your attention at the range instead of all the distracting toys you may have now/later.
