Hey everybody,

I have a Kimber TLE II Stainless with approx. 12K rounds through it.  I have been using wilson 47D magazines and shooting 230GR Winchester.  I was out shooting yesterday and I experienced a problem I had never run into before.  4 out of 10 times When i would insert a fully charged mag, the slide would get stuck loading the cartridge.  After the slide got stuck you could'nt just rack the slide and load another round.  The magazine would have to be taken out and the slide would have to be worked back and forth.  Usually the second round would load but also failed a couple of times.  The guide rod spring is a Wilson combat #18.5, it has about a 400 round count.  I thought maybe the spring was the issue but the pistol runs flawlessly after you load it.  Once it goes into battery, and you start firing there are no problems whatsoever.  Oh also I use the slingshot method, so I tried the slide release several times and it had the same issue as before.

Have you guys ever run into this problem before, and what did you do to fix it?

Thanks,

Andrew

It could be a lot of things.  Either there is a mag problem, something hindering the feedway, spring issues, or something else slowing down the slide.

Are your mag springs getting weak?  Are the feedlips cracked?  Anything look out of the ordinary on the feedramp, the barrel throat, the extractor face, etc?  Internal or external extractor?  Is the slide stop notch in the slide peened? How about the slide stop itself?  Does the disconnector move up and down freely?  Is the ejector still firmly in place, or does it have a cracked leg?

Lemme go get my pistol,  and check it out.  I have seven Wilson 47D's and I tried them all.  If I get my camera running i will try to take pics.

I have an external extractor, everything looks good on it.  All of the magazines are look fine, 4 of them have been with the pistol since I got it and 3 of them are fairly new.  They all had the same issue.  Everything seems to look okay, nothing out of the ordinary.  I detail stripped it last night and gave it a thourogh cleaning.  Im in the middle of nowhere so I can shoot go test it in a little while.

Was the round getting stuck in the chamber?  I have encountered this on match guns with tight chambers.  Usually the round will go about 4/5 of the way into the chamber and stick.  You can't pull the slide back because the extractor hook's got the rim.

What it generally takes is holding the slide with one hand, and smacking the backstrap of the grip with the other.  Once out, the offending round will usually have a bright ring around the base of the cartridge showing where it was contacting the chamber.

I have never had it happen with factory ammo, however.

Andrew, any update?  Try this.  If you know how to remove the extractor, take it out and see how your gun feeds from an full mag.  My friend had a problem like this.  The culprit was debris from frangible ammo working under his extractor.  The extractor was excessively stiff.  I know this is not your issue, but if it feeds after removal of the extractor, that should tell you what you need to know.

Check your cartridge length.  The only time I have had a similer problem was with rounds that were too long.

Sorry it took me so long to get back,  I went ahead and put a new spring in and ran 7 mags through it.  No problems whatsoever.  I have league night tomorrow night and I am taking 500rnds with me to run through it.  I usually keep my pistol very clean but since I have been shooting twice a week it has become tedious.  I am only 19 so I can't conceal carry but I open carry on our property.  I hate carrying something around that I dont have absolute faith in.

I will report back tomorrow night after going to the range.

Thanks,

Andrew
