Is there any way to reduce the effort needed to rack the slide? My wife has difficulty with it, and I have to put what seems to excess effort, the stiffest auto I've ever owned.. Probably firing 200-300 rds would loosen it up but I rarely have the opportunity. My dealer said he called KIMBER and an aftermarket softer Commander spring can't be used. Catalogs have main springs listed from 12 to 27lbs. And I'd add a snubber so the softer spring wouldn't slam back too hard. Anybody else notice this? What's the remedy besides wearing it in?

a lighter spring can be used, h/w, i would not suggest it unless you verify that its reliable w/ whatever load you will be using some tend to use a heavier spring, say 22lb b/c of increased reliability (supposidly) vs the stock 18lb spring in commander sized 1911s rule of thumb w/ recoil springs: pick the heaviest thats reliable for you whats a "snubber"? if you are refering to a recoil buffer, i'd highly suggest you dump it--most times they tend to be more problematic than to solve any non-existant problems (for example, they can cause reliability problems or improper spring compression) if you are having problems racking the slide back, besides a lighter spring or wear in time, i'd look into "How" you are racking the slide--a more refined form may help what fingers and grip do you (and your wife) use? i'd suggest you try to grasp the rear end of the slide, just before the port (or try it more over the port for more grasping area**note: not recommended for general usage h/w!), w/ your palm and 4 fingers for more gripping area and so you can apply more force on the slide also, tucking in your arms towards you body may help; hold the grip in place, use your other hand that racks and concentrate your efforts there and just pull backwards once you get a good form down to where you can actually rack it, just keep practicing it--your muscles will become adjusted to the effort and eventually, you can do it readily and easily ETA: i'm not exactly sure what kimber's stock spring weight in the CDP pro |

Compact and Pro models :Recoil Spring 45 acp & 40 s&w 22lbs, change every 800 rounds 38 Super 18lbs, change every 800 rounds Firing Pin Spring HD, change every 5000 rounds Mainspring 23lbs, change every 5000 rounds Putting a lighter than recommended recoil spring in your Pro will most likely result in failures to feed. The 4 inch guns are very hard on the recoil spring as it is and I recommend replacing them at 500 rounds instead of 800. Shock buffs are not recommended in the 4 inch guns as well. You could drop the mainspring to 19 pounds but I doubt that will make it much easier to rack the slide by much. The simplest solution for weak hand streagth is to cock the hammer before you rack the slide. |
