I want to buy a 3 or 3 1/2 for CCW.  Who has one for $1000 or less and of course totally reliable.

You're not serious are you?

Step up to a 4-4.25" barrel and reliability will be greatly enhanced.

I carry a Colt Defender which is reliable and was less than $1000. Opinions and prices will vary. The usual suspects will, no doubt, be here soon to tell you nothing less then 4.25" works in the 1911 style gun. I can only speak from my experience but my Defender has ALWAYS gone "BANG!" when I pulled the trigger as well as ALWAYS properly ejecting the spent case and properly chambering another round. Not much else to say.

Forgot about the Colt Defender, it may work but total reliability is a lot to ask for.

"Total Reliability" is impossible in anything, much less a firearm.
I don't claim "Total Reliability" for any firearm I own.

I used to be leery of the 3" guns.  If I wanted a compact, I went with a 4" minimum.  A friend and I worked out a trade where I ended up getting a 3" Kimber Ultra (first gen).  It had a small amount of work done to it and has been reliable since.  Anything mechanical can fail, but I was happily surprised.  I still prefer a 5" gun, but there are times when only the light weight 3" will do.

Kimber Ultra.  Reliable, accurate, small, light and shoots a big bullet.  What more could you ask for?  Don't know what they run now but I paid less than a grand a few years ago.

I also have a Kimber Ultra carry and i love it. It is very accurate, and after about 200 rounds i havnt had 1 FTF, or stovepipe even using a stock Kimber magazine. I had the same dilemma, i wanted a small 1911 for CCW, bit all i found was over 1K, the Kimber i got was at the local gun shop and paid $695.00 for it, and carry it with confidence every chance i get. I just ordered a few Wilson mags too, they have a 8 rounder mag for that pistol, so with 1 in the pipe you still get the same capacity as a standard 5" 1911.

+1.  Especially from the factory.  Custom, maybe.

I'd go no shorter than a commander.

I've got a Kimber Ultra Carry II and it's been malfunction free straight out of the box.  After breaking it in, have started carrying it with 230 gr. JHP and still no issues.

Last summer I attended a SI course. I showed up with a Kimber Stainless Compact and another guy showed up with a Kimber Ultra Custom. We shot the shit out of them for 2 days with no malfs. Lots of rapid fire drills and mag changes on the move.

I like my Springfield micro, super reliable.

I got a deal on a discontinued color combo, so I bought two (wife also carries). I had a rough action on one of the guns and called Springfield Armory, they said "FedEx it". A week later my gun was back and smooth as butter. Customer service goes a long way.

Anyhow, it is a great light weight carry gun for me. I am in hot FL. In a Galco royal guard, or concielable you are set.

Here is a pic of my micro, beside by full size custom rig ( full size for sale)

http://images24.fotki.com/v853/photos/3/35951/69518/Image003-vi.jpg

I paid $740 for each. alloy frame, 3" tube, night sights, all I did was smooth out the triggers and buy some nice holsters.

I love shooting the full sized 1911 but it is heavy, but SOOO smooth.
