I am looking for a .40 1911 compact. yes I know I cant get into heaven now.

decent capacity (double stack even) is a plus.
any good brands that wont cost 2k$?
any to stay away from?

I'd tend towards STI because a large chunk of their business is building guns in unholy calibers.  Check out the LS40.

no heresy!! I think the 1911 in 9mm is the world's best kept secret!  I've owned and reoladed the 45acp for years. I switched over about 3 years ago. My 3 1911's are all sporting 9mm tubes.

Just curious, what are you hoping to get out of a .40 1911 that can't be done with a .45 or 9mm?

almsot as powerful as .45, almost as much capacity as the 9. plus I just like .40. and have a bunch of ammo laying aorund.

Roger that. Short from full customs, STI is the only company that I am aware of that makes a reliable .40, although I don't know much about it honestly.

+1 on the STI.  They make several different models  in a .40.

STI as has been mentioned is probably your best bet.

Personally, If I were to buy a 40 caliber 1911 it would be a 10mm.

Interesting, I just got back from a gunshow and saw a Colt Defender in .40. Didn't know they made those....

the kimber ultra carry II looks pretty nice. they dont seem to have the .40 listed on their website, but I have seen it on other websites. anybody have any experience with the kimber?

I had one in .45. Reliability was never 100% although it was close. I sold it as I decided I didn't need a 1911 that small, I won't go under a 4 1/4" barrel nowadays.

I have shot both the Kimber and the STI in .40. They are pretty comparable IMHO. Trigger on the STI was a bit smoother, but it had been on the rental rack a lot longer than the Kimber and probably had a zillon rounds more run through it, so I can't say that STI has a better trigger, per se.  Both are a fairly comfortable shoot.

Just because it's faster and louder doesn't make it more effective.

I'd take a 9mm over a .40 any day.

But I'd rather have a .45 ACP.

I’m going to play the devils advocate on this one for a change,

The 1911 (action) works best in a 5” slide or longer and when run with ammo in the 16,000/20,000 pressure range (read 45ACP).  When you shorten the slide or start working with pressure above this, standard reliability (due to standard variances in manufacturing practices and even longevity of the unit/parts) goes down very quickly.   Granted that you can have your cake and eat it, you better be dam good at problem solving, since very few factories can get the short slide production units right the first time, and in some cases even the second time around (read pistol still a jamamatic even after coming back from repair/warranty work).

To be Blunt, if you are looking for some thing with a short slide/barrel in 40 or 9mm in stock form, it’s time to start looking for another action than that of the 1911. I’m not saying that you have to buy a Glock, but the action is sound and more than a few companies use the same lock up design.

Now don’t get me wrong, I have a micro 45 for carry in the summer/off time, run limited 1911’s in 40, and even run unlimited 1911’s in 9mm Major.  The difference between these pistol and what you would receive as stock offerings, are worlds apart. A great deal of hand fitting/tuning, ammo tayor’g, and even a bit of magic has been done to these units to make them reliable.

well I still havnt gotten many options form you guys. compact .40 1911's I have found:

STI
Kimber (apparently only in stainless)
Colt defender (also only in stainless)

any others?

seems like most people think everything but STI is un-reliable?

What heresy?? My 1911A1 says 'Colt' on the side but it came in 10mm! That is close enough to a blessing from the Pope for me! LOL

Everyone is down on Para Ordinance but I carried a stainless 14-40 LDA (officer sized)for several years.  I had to tune the extractor when I first got it but then put several thousand rounds through it without a hiccup.  Sold it when I retired and wish I had it back.
