| Ok I bought a mainspring housing for a colt combat commander XSE at a gun show (my first mistake). It was supposed to be a used colt part but it was only 10 bucks so i bought it anyways. My commander came with a plastic msh and i wanted to replace it with a steel one. When i got it home I moved the spring from the plastic one to the steel one. I installed it on the gun and now it seems like the hammer falls with less power and when the hammer is down it kinda seems lose. Is this part out of spec or do I need a longer spring? What is the problem? Thanks. |

Sounds like your sear spring is out of place. Go Here-- 1911 Assembly-Disassembly |

Get new inards for the MSH through Brownells. Im going to go out on a limb and say the spring that was in the plastic peice is "custom" fit for that paticular type of MSH, and is not supposed to go into MSH's. Kind of like the ILS specific MSH parts on SA 1911's. |

Your hammer strut is too short for the metal housing you picked up. Get a new longer hammer strut (The long thing that hangs down on the hammer) and your problem will be fixed. The position of the cap is placed by the little pin that holds the spring and cap in the msh. New spring and cap will not help you. A new hammer strut will work for you. |
You got just what you paid for. ![]() It is probably A John Masen 'Black Warrior' mainspring housing. These are well known to have the cap pin hole located too low. If you attempt to cure this problem with a longer strut, you may well put the spring into a solid stack and damage something important. Ed Brown makes the best steel mainspring housings. |
ThreeMan. Where can I get a longer strut? The Ed Brown I just bought is .036 shorter than the original strut in my Charles Daly. There is a little better than 1/8 slop when the hammer is up against the frame, as opposed to none with the OEM strut. Where/who makes longer struts? Thanks Roy |
