A buddy of mine in the navy is getting back home soon, and has been emailing me saying he is interested in getting a .45. I told him the way to go was 1911 and outlined some of the pros and cons. he seemed most interested in a double stack version. he wants its for home defence and plinking, I assume he doesnt plan on CC. from what I see for under 7-800$ his options are a

para ordinance p14
kimber bp ten II
springfield standard high capacity

which of these is going to be the most reliable out of the box. accuracy and looks are a plus, but come second to reliability. He is brand new to any kind of firearms (except the M9 he fired in training, and my guns), so I dont want him to get a gun that will have any problems or complications. what should I recomend to him?

any thoughts and previous experiences would be appreciated.

I haven't shot one, I've seen a couple and they are nice, I do hear great reviews about them and have never heard anything bad about them.

yeh but the sti's are like 1,500$. dont think he wants to drop that much on his first gun. I am only interested in choices that are under 1k$

My early 90’s single action P14-45 eats anything I feed it. I can run about 450+ rounds of bargain ammo from ChinaMart before she starts to malf from the filth.

STI, SVI are the only reliable DS on the market.

Edit I did crack two SA frames using nothing but AE 230 FMJ.  First was around 5,000 rounds. Second was under 2,000. 3rd unkown  I sold the gun the second it came back from SA. I did notice that on the 3rd time the replaced the barrel and it was fit much better than the first two times.

A STI is a lot cheaper in the long run. If you want a fat gun that run's 100%

If not, get a para

These three always work and with a  empty mag only weigh in at 360z,34oz,and 30oz respectively making them much lighter than any other Hi Cap 1911.

uhm, yeh if he was rich I would recomond the STI. they are amazing. but like I said before, he isnt. he is trying to stay under 1000$ at least.

anyone have any real life experiences with the para, kimber, or springfield double stack?

so far one positive for the para, and one for the springfield. only one negative for the springfield.

I had a Para P14 and loved it. It made me a die hard Para fan and led to a Para single column pistol purchase. That experience changed everything, and I will not buy another Para again.

I don't have experience with the other manufacturers, but if I were to get back into the widebody market I would probably choose between Springfield and STI.

While not a 1911, the Glock 21 is a double stacked mag 45acp weapon that should not be overlooked because of your prejudices against non-1911 handguns.

With a life expectancy of more than 10X the ones listed above, that alone should get it at the very least some consideration....

1) This is a 1911 forum, which means we talk about 1-9-1-1's.

2) A Glock is made of plastic.  My department makes officers turn in their Glocks after they start to wear OUT.  Notice I did not say break in.

3) He asked about a double stacked 1911 pistols.

4) I doubt I will ever see a 90 year old Glock that has been through several wars, has been passed through four generations, and still functions.  I have seen 1911's that have done this.  Granted, they haven't been double stack 1911's, but that is not my point.  My point is 1911's last and have a soul.

5) I have been an ass long enough, I will stop now.

As to the original post, I know you didn't ask about STI, but they are the best double stacked 1911 style pistol.  I have shot many and will buy one in the future when I need an open gun.  As someone else has stated, the money spent on a STI will go much further than money spent on the cheaper Para or Springfield.

Did Todd Jarrett's para puke on him this year at the 2007 ltd/production nationals?

He should save his money a little longer and get an STI, or if he can't swing a decent quality pistol, get an XD.

I've had two frames crack with paras.  The first a couple years ago & a recent one in the last couple weeks.  After several phone calls & arguments they agreed to send me
a new frame on the first occurance.  Last week they started at $300.00 for a frame, but I  argued & could only get them down to $150.00. The rail cracked where it meets the frame on one side. Definitely workmanship.  He told me I had to pay something
& $150.00 was as low as he would go.  There repair policy stinks & I wouldn't purchase
another.

Shooting partner sent a TJ model back to Para for warrenty work.

He gets a call whats wrong with this pistol we can't see anything wrong? Look at the Fing slide your sights fell off. This same gun was sent with a commander or shorter length recoil spring. right from para.

I do like to bust his Balls on the para as he sold me his STI edge when he tought he would no longer shot Ltd in USPSA.

10K is the warranty on SIGS and you seldom hear they are inferior to glocks or anything else.I wouldnt worry about it ,a 1911 platform in a full size gun for serious duty is still more popular than ever in the real world and lets not forget they are still the main choice for the two biggest divisions in IPSC.

The main reason i advocate the modular S_I guns is its reduced weight bringing it into the 21 century rivalling the more modern designs like glock , HK , tarus , and Sig Hi cap 45's and still be a 1911 design . If your on a budget what about wilsons full size    KZ model.

It's not uncommon for S_I guns to go 100k rounds.

I do have a kimber stainless 10 II,  it shoots great, never had any problem with it.
Also have a stainless colt series 80.  it shoots well also, but not quite as accurate as the kimber.

Paras are okay but expect to cull/tweak numerous mags to get several that work reliably. No experience w/ the double stack Springer but the mags are interchangeable IIRC. I'd stick w/ a single stack for a first gun.
