My grip safety spring is either broken or lost its tension, sometimes it works, sometimes it doesnt.  How difficult is tearing down the grip frame on this gun?  Should I just bite the bullet and have my gunsmith do it?

Swapping it out is about two times as hard as changing a light bulb. If you have a basic "combat pistol" it is simple enough to change it out. If you have a finer trigger job, the simple drop in might alter the performance and the spring tabs would be best served having a gunsmith tune it. But, if you have a < $1,000 1911, a simple drop in should suffice, provided you test for function.

I have, from what I know, a stock norinco.

Lightbulb fix. Drop one in, test for function, and you'll be fine.

Depends on what you mean by "sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't". If you are referring to your grip safety not having enough tension to make it "pop" all the way out when released, a new sear spring should fix you up, and is fairly easy, assuming you know how to detail strip and safety check a 1911. But if you are saying sometimes your grip safety doesn't function ie. you can pull the trigger and drop the hammer without depressing the grip safety, then no, you need more than a new spring to help you out. Good luck.

Please expand on this.

Sometimes the spring holds it out far enough to keep it from firing with not gripped, sometimes it doesnt.

The Norinco guns have great frames and slides, mediocre barrels and crappy internals. You may be able to just replace the spring but you'd be wiser to have it looked at by a competent 1911 smith.

I may go that direction then. I have one in mind who knows whats going on.
