When my slide locks back on an empty magazine, I can't press the slide stop down to release the slide without dropping the magazine or pulling back slightly on the slide while pressing down on the slide stop.  Is this normal function or am I having a malfunction?

Thanks
Dan

It's always going to be harder to release the slide with an empty mag in place. You're fighting against the recoil spring as well as the mag spring when you do this.

If you 1911 has a tunned trigger. It is notrecomended to slam the slide home on a empty chamber.

It's also not recommended to use the slide STOP to release the slide.  Use the slingshot method.

ETA - you can use the slide stop to release the slide but good luck working it in a high stress situation.  Most training classes will tell you to use gross motor skills (grab the slide and pull back) not fine motor skills (trying to fine the tiny lever of the slide stop).  To each his own.

Either method works, all in what you like.

The 1911 was designed to release the slide from the slide release, it is also known as the slide stop, it has 2 functions. These words come from Larry Vickers, you cannot argue his credentials.
