ok this is probably a stupid question. I dont even own a 1911. feel like I should eventually get one, and I have always wondered.

does the standard fullsize (1911A1) take the 8rd mag? does it stick out of the bottom a little?

I always thought the 7rd mag fit flush, so the 8 must stick out right?

these are chip mc cormick 8 rounders with the extended base pad. they also have one that's a bit more flush but still sticks out slightly.

Stupid, huh?

IMO, stupid is buying a brand X 1911 and coming on here to find out what a piece of crap it is, or how much was overpaid. Do your research and when your time comes you'll be in a better position to make the best purchase.

That said,

Traditional Colt and USGI mags have a flush steel basepad welded to the tube. These mags are 7 rounders. There are 8 round mags that use the same tubes (different follower and spring)

There are also 7 and 8 round mags that are not flush fitting because they have a sliding basepad and allow hassle free disassembly from the bottom. Wilson Combat typifies this style

Moving down the post...

Wilsons are not cheap, but they are the standard that go-to mags are judged by. A lot of people bitch about Wilson Mags costing $25 NIW (for bargain hunters). What does a NIW Glock or Para mag cost? What does a NIW HK mag cost? Buy right once and you save in the long run.

Heh. Barney's or Belsco?

I just picked up a Sig Revolution XO from Barney's. I'll be on the lookout for mags soon.
Unfortunately, it doesn't look like I'll be around for the gun show next weekend.

Anyone have brand recommendations? I've heard good things about the mentioned
McCormicks, and the Mec-Gar mags.

I can't even remember the last time I checked, but here's my POV.

I only use Wilson 7 rounders.

(posted numerous times before):
Few years back, I called Wilson and asked how they got 8 in a 7.  Guy told me:
1.  They changed the follower from convex to concave.
2.  They removed 1 coil (or was it 2) from the spring.
3.  Also told me that if I wanted the ultimate in reliability, stick with the 7s.

I've been using the 7s a long time, and have no plans of changing.

I also know folks who have been using the 8s quite a while, and have zero problems.

One thing that annoys the crap out of me, is doing a tac reload with an 8 rounder - I have to push the mag in a bit harder than when using a 7 rounder.  Pretty much a subjective opinion based on an objective fact, but there it is.

Either way though, I highly recommend Wilson mags.

I like Wilson 47D's as well.  Never had a problem with them.

Midway has them for $27.99.  Anyone notice with their website has change, their prices have went up?  Also don't see the monthly specials anymore.  Maybe I missed it.

Thing is, the mag body itself - not the guts - will last a L O N G time.  I just rebuilt 6 or 7 of mine a few months ago.

+1

almost all 7 rnders are flush (origional 1911 specs, its flush, 7rnds i believe); commercial mags began to add the extra rnd a few decades back to 8 rnds, most of which stick out a tad

the most popular and usually reliable flush 8rnd mag i know of are the CMC power mags
