Anyone who knows me will tell ya’ that I truly love to build 1911s. I don’t think a day, or hour, or minute, or even second goes by that I’m not working with or thinking about 1911s in some way. Every build presents me with something new whether it is a challenge met, further knowledge gained, or the satisfaction of doing it even better than before. And, while finishing a gun is always fulfilling, every now and again there are the builds that are rewarding on more than just the usual merits of the conversion… this gun is one such instance.

The gun started life as a ‘60s era Colt Commercial complete with the roll-marks we all love and some of the typical Colt “characteristics” that we’ve come to expect. These often challenging “characteristics" always make for a rewarding sense of accomplishment when the shooting begins and your able to look back on the time spent turning a stock gun into something that can be used and carried for a lifetime to come. But, all of that aside, the best part of this particular build was knowing that the gun was going to a gentleman who, when he probably had much bigger priorities, went out of his way to contribute to and support LTW and our membership during one of our past efforts.

When his gun arrived at the shop some time ago there was a short letter with the piece outlining the owner’s basic desires and needs but giving overall control of the conversion to the builder. With no rush from the then overseas owner, occasionally Ted and I would banter back and forth about what was to be done to the gun but when the time came and I started filling, banging, scratching, and grinding I knew that only the best I had to offer would do, so this gun got it all... besides, with a Colt Commercial in front of me how could I do any less. From the frame and slide fit, to the hand-cut checkering, to the complete line straightening, Kart barrel, and right down to the polished blue finish this was certainly a gun and an owner who deserved the best... enjoy!

simply amazing.

every time I open a thread like this I know to expect an urge to sell off some less-than-desirable pieces and have something like this built.

again, an amazing job.

Thanks for all the kind words guys... this was a gun that was a real pleasure to build and it's going to a great guy.

The insert in the front sight is 24k gold... it's something that we do in the shop and the gold is inlaid in to the sight itself. The MSH is an Ed Brown blank that I hand-checkered at 30lpi.

JMB himself, were he still alive, would come over and shake your hand on looking at that one.

WILL YOU PLEASE STOP POSTING THESE KINDS OF THREADS UNTIL I'M MAKING THE BIG $, OR AT LEAST START MAKING THEM A LITTLE UGLY SOMEHOW?!

I have a harem of beautiful ladies in my locker. Some are the real deal, some reproduction, some customized for me by the manufacturer. They are all something that most of my brethren would love to place dibs on when I find that eerie white spot on my belly and I die two weeks later. And every time I come to the locker to make nice with them, they give me that cold steel glance because they know I have been oggling yours.

Ban these posts! It's for the owned and jealous 1911s!!! (and my wallet and sanity )

Yet another example of why I prefer the Yost-Bonitz-Burton style of custom over most anyone else out there.

That pistol is stunning.

And worthy of a bump!

Every one he posts outdoes the previous pistol.

It's maddening to say the least.

As usual, nothing but crap.  I can't understand how you can continue to show your face here with pictures of guns such as this.  The only way to redeem yourself would be to send it to me so I can dispose of it properly.  IM me for my address and I'll make sure it gets a proper burial.

(I dream of the day that actually works...nice job!  Now excuse me while I wipe the drool from my chin.)

When I can afford a BBQ gun this is the man that I'll have build it.
