They were all calling my name the other day but decided to hold off until I got some feedback / education from the folks here.  I was at a local shop to pick up something else when I noticed their full selection of 1911's.  I had heard good things about the Dan Wesson 1911's but had never been able to handle one.  I am not a fan of the target sights so I looked at the stainless bobtail commander with tritium sights for $869.  It felt great in my hand and I liked the overall fit and finish.  They also had a stainless Kimber TLE with tritium sights for $939 and a stainless Springfield Loaded for $699.

Honestly, the main purpose for this pistol would be to add a 1911 to my collection.  It might see a little carry time but I doubt it would replace my other options.  It would primarily be used at the range.  So based upon it's intended use and the price points, what would you suggest?  Is the Springfield loaded a good choice or is it money well spent to go for the Kimber or Dan Wesson?

I can't comment on the Wesson, but as far as the kimber and springfield go, you'll get the best bang for your buck with the springer IMHO.  You can spend the money you save on ammo, some sweet grips, custom work or other accessories.  Not to mention the springer doesn't have the firing pin safety like the kimber.  Not a big deal to some, but is to others.

I would go with a Kimber Warior in that price range.  No extra safeties like the TLE.  Out of your choics I quess the SA looks best.

i have owned  all 3, i have the DW Cbob as my Carry gun. i like it better than the kimber and the Springfield.  i no longer have the kimber or the springfield. both have been traded off for other things.  Cbob has been flawless.  i still think the best bang for the buck is the new DW since Cz bought them out.  i would not have a problem buying any of them though.

my order of Choice if money was tight.

Springfield
DW
Kimber

if money was not a issue.
DW
Springfield
Kimber

the Kimber would be my last choice out of all of them. i owned 3 kimbers and i just don't like them as well as the others. i try to but it just doesn't fit.

Agreed.  I've directly compared/shot a friend's CBOB against both my Kimbers (Series I SS UC and Warrior) and there is little comparison in terms of fit/finish.  The DW blows them both away.  Plus, as far as I understand, no MIM in DW pistols.  If I could, I'd trade my UC for a CBOB, and not look back.

Good luck.

I have not owned SA or Kimber, but am a very happy DW owner.

Considering you intended use I'd go with the Springfield.

I am forced to agree, although the Dan Wesson is a much better pistol.  The big strength of the DW is that it can do duty as just about everything, but if you will be primarily punching paper then you should get a 5" pistol.

I'll disagree.  I've owned SA's and Kimbers and they have all worked 100%.  I tried three DW's (Razorback, PM7 and CBOB) and they were all less than stellar.  All three, same issues - would not feed, would not eject, sharp as hell etc.  They were very good looking but after trips back to DW were not up to par and they were sold to friends who are still working on them as project guns.  There is a reason the EB Kobra is twice as expensive as the CBOB

Pick the SA and don't look back.

In that oder - DW is, IMO, the best value of the three and I regret selling the two I used to own - a CBOB and the Razorback.  For a run of the mill production guns, they were really well executed - good quality parts, fit and finish (both of the guns were the CZ variety).

I've always had good luck with SAs - ranging from the Custom shop to the milspec guns (never owned the GI model).

The two Kimbers I had, one of them was nothing but a single shot until the extractor was tuned, but both guns were extremely accurate.

Out of curiosity, were these pre or post CZ buyout?  I know the external extractor models had a few issues.

I had a Springfield once. Sold it within 24 hours.  The speed bump on the pistol was so sharp it hurt to grip it much less fire it.

They were all internal extracter, CZ pistols.  You couldn't tell that the SA grip safety was sharp when you bought it?  Sounds kinda fishy to me, most SA's are finished pretty well.

I would choose the S/a good starter 1911,dont worry you'll buy others. They are terribly addictive. I have a SW, 2 Kimbers ,1 S/A TRP Operator, and I just got my first Wilson combat today. Welcome to the club

Used piece I bought through our local gun board, loaded compact model. Didn't like the grip safety (very sharp) or the gas pedal type ambi-safety.  Sold it the next day and got a Kimber instead.

Best damn 1911 under a $1000.  IMO of course.  Never had an issue with a little over 3000 rounds.

Springfield. Get the Loaded then ditch the FLGR for a GI guide and plug. You'll have a damn near perfect 1911 IMO. Only nice thing about the Kimber might be the checkered frontstrap, but I'd still take the SA. No experience here with the Dan Wesson.

A little late to this party but here is my experience, Had a Kimber Desert Warrior, could not depend on it and couldnt shoot groups with it to save my life.  It had what looked like a wavy barrel with corrosion in the rifleing.  Went back to Kimber 2X for multiple issues (FTF, FTE).  The second time it went back to Kimber I got a Springfield XD to fill my .45 craving, never had one single hiccup with it and it shoots really nice groups.  (I know its not a 1911 but I am just saying as a company they have been great)  I never even shot the Kimber again after it came back and sold it to a dealer.  I was done with this pistol that was 2X the cost of my springfield shooting not even 1/2 as good.  Now, for Wesson, I am picking mine up tomorrow, the fit and finish are exceptional but for now all I can say is I cannot wait to get mine.  Good luck with your choice.
