I'd be comfortable with either but would probably go with the single-stack.

The downsides with the STI:

- magazines run around $50
- holster selection is limited

are there any reliability problems with the STI tacticals?

As a TRP owner I assure you that you will be very pleased with one, however, I also greatly desire a 2011.

Not really.  About the biggest problem with them is that it can be tricky to get all your magazines to lock back the slide when empty.   Other than that, all usual 1911 issues apply.

is it common for the 140mm mags to not lock back?

I'd pick the TRP. In fact, that's exactly what I did. The STI 1911s don't fit in a tightly boned holster like the VM2. I don't know about the mag problems, though.

The TRP should work for you just fine.  I would choose the tactical. wait, I already did.  I have always wanted a 2011, so I finally saved enough money and ordered a new tactical.  I really doubt that one will outshoot the other.  I just wanted the extra capacity and the rail.  The tactical is hard to find in 45, but there is one in the EE for a really good price.  Get it and if you don't like it then sell it.  If I didn't already have a deposit on one I would scoop it up.  Expect a 3+ month wait on a new one.  STI is running a little behind.

If you are in need of a flush fit mag, you don`t need 140mm mags, the flush fit mags are 120mm length. My 140mm mags lock back with one round left in the mag. I have 4 of them that were tuned from Beven Grams. The 120`s have always locked the slide when empty.
I have a tactical frame 2011. I ordered a slide/frame fit and had the rest gunsmith built with Cylinder & Slide inner parts and a Kart barrel. I go through about 300 rounds a week and since then end of March it has been 100% with every round through it.
My other STI 2011 is a standard frame that was also built and has been 100% for a little over a year.
Go to STI`s website to the FAQ and there is a link to holster makers. I use a Blade-Tech. What ever gun you choose will be a winner. Good luck.

Of the two, I'd go TRP.
