In order to be able to do all of your own work on 1911s, what skills do you need?

Obviously, some intimate knowledge of the design and how it works are needed, but what actual skills are needed? Should you be a machinist? A welder? A gunsmithing school graduate? Something else entirely?

Detailed knowledge of the 1911... how it works, what does what, what causes what, etc., the little nuances of how the parts relate to each other and effect each others operation. Also a good sense of aesthetics is worth its weight in gold... anyone can be taught to fit a grip safety, making it look good is another story.

Being a trained machinist certainly won't hurt... but to do all your own work you at least need to know how to run a lathe and a mill for the operations/modifications you want to perform on the guns. Having some welding knowledge may also help depending on what you want to do with the gun. Gunsmithing school... not required.

Something else entirely?

More than anything else I can think of having a genuine love for the gun and being a shooter or having a good and in depth shooting foundation on which to base your knowledge of the guns operation and how and/or why certain modifications work or don't work.
