can you answer a general 1911 question. i got a springfield 1911, used. after the last shot the slide wont stay open. even with a empty mag and you rack it by hand it only catched some of the times. and when looking at the side it just barley catches it. i bought 2 new mags today chip mccormicks and still the same. so im ruling out a mag problem. do the slide catches ever wear out, or what could be going on? -chris |

like i said im new to the 1911 so this may be worded wrong, just trying to explain it best i can. i tried a buddies slide stop same problem on my gun. his worked on his, but not on mine. im maybe thinking theres to much tension on the spring thing that pushes against it. theres no detint or anything on my slide stop where the lil nub thingy locks into it. i polished the end of the slide stop, and polished the lil nub thing and compressed the spring a couple times by hand. it catches a lil better but not all the time. its all most like the slide stop isnt long enough. when it catches it barley catches the slide. we bent up the tabs on the magazine hoping itd push up more on it. anyway im still kinda lost. -chris |

It sounds like a slide stop issue regardless. Your frame might be a little wide and not allowing the stop to go in far enough to contact the follower the way it's supposed to. When you pull the slide back, and engage the slide stop yourself - does it feel like it goes into the notch easily or is there binding pressure? This would indicate some interference with the slide stop notch (could be cut out of spec). I have had to many of times take the slide stop and run a very small bead with the TIG welder and grind off the excess leaving just about .005 - .01 on the stop's lip that engages the follower. You have to be careful when doing this as not to change the angles of the slide stop faces (can make putting the pistol back together a real pain). You also have to make sure that too much material wasn't left to interfere with rounds in the magazine. You don't want a round to engage or push the stop out while shooting. This sounds like a warranty issue - a relatively simple fix. What kind of metal is it? Stainles or Carbon steel? Bob |
bob its regular steel nothing fancy. im not the orginal owner so that probably kills the warrenty. may try to add some length to the slide stop so it goes up into the notch a lil more on the slide. either that or just count the shots and not rely on the slide staying back when empty. -chris |
