I've been thinking of getting an Officer's-size 1911 to fill out my 1911 stable, and wonder:

Do all (except perhaps the micro ones like SA's EMP) take the same mag?  I know my gov't and commander take the same mags, but with the shortened frames on the officers seems like the mag might be different.

There's three sizes of 1911 mags, Para hi-cap's excepted.

Govt:  7 or 8 rds

Commander:  7 or 8 rds

OACP aka Officer's: 6 or 7 rds

SA's Micro takes the  OACP mags, but not the EMP.

Hope this helps...........

Commander uses the same mags as the Govt model.

Thanks...

So an Officer-size uses different mags than Govt or Commander.

That's what I needed to know.

3 frame sizes = 3 standard mags

Regular (Government/full-size & Commander) 7 (8)

Compact (Officer, Compact, CCO)  6 (7)

Micro (defender, micro)  5 (6) or just 6

() = the additional round by using the shorter spring

Not if you're referring to the Springfield Micro. It takes the standard 6rd OACP mag or Chip McCormick 7rd mag.

I've never, ever seen a 1911 with a 5rd mag..............

You may want to consider staying away from mags with the metal split followers, such as Chip McCormick mags, if you plan on getting a model with an aluminum frame.  They have a tendancy to scratch or gouge the feed ramp area.
