I have S/A Loaded that came with a full length guide rod.  I want to change it out for a G.I. Plug and Spring Guide so I do not need tools to field strip it.  What are the pro's and con's of each ?

very simple ...Fix the pistol as SA intended, but have the full length guide rod adjusted so NO tools are needed.

Call EGW .......they will fit you up with a full length rod [ stainless ] for about $20

ask them to shorten the rod for your gun so that tools are not needed for take down.

They will do that for no extra charge !!

Your pistol will then have a full length rod............ and no special tools will be needed, you will have to install the plug that EGW will supply.

Best of both worlds ......... if you want the pistol to have the full guide rod

The biggest reason to use the GI setup is one handed malfunction clearing. You can rack the slide far enough to chamber a round if need be.

...And that advantage is only usable with full size, 5" 1911s. Commanders and shorter lack the clearance, so the point is moot with them.
