I've never owned a 1911. Currently, my only .45 is a Sig P220. I love it. I've always wanted a 1911, though. I have the opportunity to buy a SW1911, used. It's a lot of money (for me), so how about your thoughts. Is that a good choice? Easy to carry (comparted to the 220)? Reliable? Any opinions are appreciated. |

Do you have the opportunity to also "test drive" it? Do that if you can. There's been a lot of talk about bad apples with the SW1911's. If it performs at the range for you, Buy it. I have a stainless SW1911, I've had NO problems post ~250 rounds/ break in. Even then, it would only occasionaly have FTE/stovepipes, and that could have been operator error, ie. limp wristing it. Good luck. Post a pic if you buy it. ETA: mixed reviews here. |

I have about 2000 rounds through mine. I had to send it back for a couple of things, I have a thread in the S&W forum about it. I'm very pleased with mine, I've never had malfunctions of any type. The only reason I finally sent it back was because the damn link pin kept falling out. They made it right though, and at NO cost to me. They paid shipping and all. ETA...I have the base all carbon steel version with fixed sights. |

Do a search, this comes up frequently. (As a matter of fact, here's a post on this same page:) www.ar15.com/forums/topic.html?b=5&f=49&t=42225 I had the stainless SW199, and it was awesome. Everyone that shot it loved it. There's just something about the balance of a full-size 1911. But, I wanted a gun for carry, and for me, the full-size is too heavy. Sold it and bought a SW1911SC. That's the Commander-sized gun made of Scandium-aluminum alloy. 10oz. lighter than steel, with a 3/4" shorter barrel. I've only put a couple hundred rounds down range so far, but it's flawless. No real difference in recoil that I can tell. Just as accurate as the 5" model. Much easier to carry. Also, check out these 1911 forums: forums.1911forum.com/ forum.m1911.org/forumdisplay.php?f=7 You'll find way more positive than negative comments. (Go to the S&W forum in each group.) And, if there's a problem, S&W sends a prepaid shipping label. Not many of them do that. I think the Scandium was $750 before tax, and that is a lot of money for me. But, on a value-for-dollar basis, the S&W guns rank high in my book. |

I have a SW1911PD with the 4.25" (Commander) barrel. It shoots amazingly well and feeds eveything I have put thru it (about 1000 rounds so far). Its my main carry gun. I had it tweaked over by someone from the Perfromance Center before I got it (a family member is an engineer at S&W and he had it set it up for me). |
