I dont have a 1911, but I am curious about the design. I have seen .22 conversions that replace the slide. can one swap out slides and use shorter/longer barrels. say I had a standard government style 1911, could I swap in a shorter or longer slide?

what about calibers, is it like an AR in that all you need to swap is the upper/slide, and you can shoot different calibers?

No, the ejector is in different locations on different caliber frames.  There are a few which interchange, but not many.

For the most part yes.  400 Corbon is just a barrel change.  38 super, 9mm, 40 S&W, .22 are all possible using a common frame as the bace.

9mm, 38 super same slide, extractor and ejector
40, 10mm same slide, extractor and ejector
45 I think stands alone.

Recoil spring will need to change with cal.

Marvel is the only 22 conversion to buy.

With a gov sized frame you can go as short as a commander length barrel, provided you swap the right parts.

Almost, there is 400 corbon and like a 45 super or something like that, I don't know anything about it, only heard about it.

so will a complete commander slide drop right onto a government sized frame? or would it need to be fitted.

Used  may need to be fitted, but odds are it should drop on. May not fit as well as it should but it should work.

If your buying a new caspian slide, it def will need to be fitted.
