| I was checking out some machined slides on Brownells and noticed it said "fitting by gunsmith required" in the description. Does anyone know exactly what needs to be fitted? Are we talking one specific thing that a gunsmith would need to do (head space?), or are they just recommending you to have a gunsmith do the whole thing. I would consider myself capable of definitely stripping off the old parts off my slide and putting them on the new slide or putting new parts on it. |

It needs to be fit to the frame first...the slide "ways" in your frame could be too tight, could be too loose. The width of the slide could be too tight or too loose. This is because no two frames (or slides, for that matter) are exactly the same. Then, the distance from the breach to the first locking lug on the new slide could (more than likely) be different from the one you are replacing. If it's a greater distance you'll need to get and fit a new barrel. If the distance is smaller, you can more than likely keep your barrel, though the hood will need to be shortened to fit the new slide. Not to mention the amount of lock up you get between your barrel and the new slide...may need a longer barrel link. Oh, and your barrel bushing could be too loose or too tight in the new slide. Either way, you're looking at a few tools that you'll need to get the job done...that is if you feel comfortable getting into it yourself. All in all, it's pretty involved... -Jbot ETA: Get the two Kuhnhausen books found at Heritage Gun Books..."The Colt .45 Automatic" and "The U.S. M1911/M1911A1 Pistols". Pretty much a must have for that kind of work. |
