Springfield came out with a 1911 Operator that had a full picatinny rail. I really like the design of the full rail as opposed to the 1/2 rail. My question is who else has come out with a full rail other than Springfield? I really want to buy one, but i want to shop around and look. Thanks a bunch.

That is a great look for the 1911, IMHO, PonchHair.  You've made a great choice, and I'll be interested to see what you find.

Good luck on your search.

You'll find Springfield (discontinued; but may be had for a small fortune in their custom shop), and you can build a similar double-stack from STI frame, but beyond that you're not likely to find one like that...

not much of a market for that I think. Good luck.

I've got one of the original Milspec Operators with the full-length rail.  I've always planned on sending it off to a good 'smith to have the rail cut down to look like the current Operator.

If you are set on the full rail, keep an eye on sites like auctionarms and gunbroker.

If you are willing to pay the price, the GunCrafter is offering the 50GI (i think it's called the model 2) with the full length, railed dustcover - 50 cal is the standard barrel fitted to the gun, but it is shipped with a 45 cal barrel.  Only inhibition is the price:  $3,000.00+ dollars i think

There is a little shop here that has a Springfield w/ a full lenght rail/dustcover that is the shop owners personal gun. He told me that it has also been through the Springfield custom shop. If it's still there you could probably get it for $1200-$1500. It looks like the one in your picture.
Name of the shop is Gunsmoke  850-926-5500. Ask for CW.

Ask around at the local shops. A buddy of mine had one transferred in to our Gander Mountain just before Christmas (NIB, just part of GM's in stock stuff) and it just happened to be the older model. Majorly badass look with that full length rail.

There are still some floating around out there. As mentioned above though, I don't think there are many options as for current production pistols like that.

IMO it is the better looking 1911 out there. I will have to see about giving that guy a call Tomcatt. Thanks for all the help guys, I will keep searching for this rare SOB!

DON'T YOU DARE CUT THAT RAIL DOWN!!!

The original Milspec Operators are now a pretty tough-to-find rarity on the Used Market after they were discontinued!  If you ABSOPOSILUTELY MUST have a 'new length' Operator model, put your MilSpec up for sale on GunBroker or something, set the reserve price, and I'd bet you could get enough to just BUY A NEW CURRENT ONE.

Some people may be willing to pay that much JUST to get the FULL RAIL model as it's VERY tough to find in the MilSpect variation...

Don't ruin it's value!  If you want something different sell it & buy what you want.

I second that!  Cutting down a rare piece is really a crime.

You should see the hack jobs some of my relatives have done on truly classic pieces, like Vietnam-era USGI 1911's and 1950's vintage Sako rifles.
