Looking for a good 1911 to CCW. Carry a full-size 5" right now, looking to go smaller. Saw a Springfield Ultra Carry V10 with a ported barrel and slide the other day at the local toy store, thinking about that. Also heard that mini-1911s are no good for reliability, was told to go no smaller than an Officer's model. Don't want to spend a grip of money, around $500-600, less if possible.

Let's here your suggestions and see what YOU carry!

IMO...stay with a Commander if you are gonna go short.  Superchopped 1911s can be a crap shoot.  You may get one that works.....you may not.

Colt Commander 4 1/4" in a Milt Sparks Summer Special II. Works well in any clothing any time of the year. Its short enough so I ride in a car with no discomfort, even on long drives.

For your price range, a used S&W1911SC (scandium lightweight frame) or a lightweight Springfield Armory Champion.  I don't know if you can find a used commander Colt for that price.

There are small 1911s out there that work perfectly, but you have to find them. If that is the route you want to go, go for it. Just don't get attatched to the gun(s) before you confirm that they work.

I have a Colt Commander. I don't mind carrying it, either, just wondered if their was something even smaller that was reliable - what about and Officer's model, what is the barrel length for those?

Colt CCO

Aluminum frame and Officers length slide.  A great combo.

while i have never owned a colt 1911 (only handled and shot em), i'd also agree that they are great 1911s and the CCO or the origional commander would be a great CCW gun
