I shoot rat shot (CCI) often with my Colt Combat Commander.  Does anyone know if a smooth barrel is available?

That'd turn your 1911 into an AOW - a title II weapon. So you probably aren't going to find them around much.

Walkure is correct

The National Firearms Act

Title 26, United States Code

INTERNAL REVENUE CODE

CHAPTER 53 -- MACHINE GUNS, DESTRUCTIVE DEVICES, AND CERTAIN OTHER FIREARMS

Any other weapon. Any weapon or device capable of being concealed on the person from which a shot can be discharged through the energy of an explosive, a pistol or revolver having a barrel with a smooth bore designed or redesigned to fire a fixed shotgun shell, weapons with combination shotgun and rifle barrels 12 inches or more, less than 18 inches in length, from which only a single discharge can be made from either barrel without manual reloading, and shall include any such weapon which may be readily restored to fire. Such term shall not include a pistol or a revolver having a rifled bore, or rifled bores, or weapons designed, made, or intended to be fired from the shoulder and not capable of firing fixed ammunition.

I guess that would be include a .45 smooth barrel of 18" or more on a pistol as well?  I won't have one if it is illegal.  I was hoping to improve shot pattern.  Thanks for the information.

No dice on the smooth bore.

HOWEVER, some 1911 barrels have deeper rifling than others. Maybe you should ask which ones come w/ the least-shallow grooves?

There was a gunsmith in PA that made barrels with about a half inch of rifling in the bore in front of the chamber and then smooth the rest of the way.  I guess (don't quote me on this), that this makes the barrel compliant with the law on smooth bore.

Not sure of his name right off hand, but I can check.

Did I hear this correctly or was this also a violation of law?

Not sure I understand why a smooth barrel is important.  The shell stays inside its container until it leaves the muzzle, so leading is not a problem, right?

BTW, I have shot BBM Hardcaps, and some reloaded shotshells I got from Old Western Scrounger, in cut-down .308 cases, but I haven't tried CCI.  Good stuff?  They make it in .45?

1-Rifled bores disrupt the patterns of the shot.  The individual shot is "clumped" and not dispersed evenly across the target.  Shotguns have smooth bores for this reason.  Has nothing to do with leading or where the shell stays.

2-Yes, CCI makes .45 shot shells.  They work very well.  Looks like its #9 shot.
