I'm looking for opinions on this as a dependable carry around the home gun. The 4" lightweight champion. Thanks www.springfield-armory.com/prod-pstl-1911-GI.shtml |

Now thats a kicker! My LW GI looks identical to that. I went with the beavertail, Yo-Bo rear sight and solid trigger with some light beveling and front night sight. Only difference is a single sided safety. Great minds must think alike! Mine is used for off-duty and shoots pisser. No problems after 950+ rounds of 230 Speer JHP-GD. Excellent buy for the coin. |
I have the same gun and use it in the stock configuration with plans for slight modifications in the future. I have put @1000 rnd through it with no problems. It has been totally reliable from the box using Chip McCormick 8rnd power mags and the Springfield factoryy mags. I think it is a great deal for the price. The downsides is that the stock trigger is too heavy, i've had some polishing done to mine and it helped but it needs more. The beavertail thing bothers me and will be thi first thing to get changed. The finish isn't too durable but I really like the wear anyway. Resale is a negetive, when I first got it I didn't like it and tried to sell it, I couldn't get any interest above $325 when it was only a few weeks old. Some positives, After deciding to keep it, the more I shot it the more I was impressed. Its reliable, accurate, tighter than my SA fullsize loaded, light to carry. It also doesn't recoil any more than a fullsize with the same ammo, must be the duel recoil spring. For the $439 I paid for it new it is a great workhorse kind of gun. |
Just a tip Big_Jim-the compact eats recoil springs. If you have at or over 1000 rounds through it, it's time for a spring change. Brownell's has a kit for the Champ- Brownell's Wolff recoil springs Scroll down to the bottom..you want the 22lb spring, which is factory standard. |
