| I'm sure this question has been asked before, but I could not find the thread. I want to know how good the .22lr conversions really are. I just bought a kimber, I saw a kimber kit for around 250.00 I believe. is this my only option? is it worth the cash or is there a better one out there for the money? or even if any are worth buying? up date does anyone know if ciener kits made for kimber any good? |

From what I have read I think kimber just has their name put on the ceiner kit and marvel also offers a couple options. I have a kimber target 1911 in 22lr and this is just their 22lr kit with a lightweight frame to make a complete firearm. I am pretty happy with my kimber in 22lr but now that I am thinking about getting a silencer I sort of wish I had looked harder at the marvel stuff since you can get one already threaded for a silencer. There are a lot of opinions on the different kits and all I can say is it took a while for my complete kimber 22lr 1911 to break in and even now if it is really cold it does not function perfectly. |

Well I have had MY Kimber 22 LR kit now for about a month. And other than having to fit the mags to My Springfield TRP. It's been a great kit, I have shot over 3500 rnds and it likes all ammo except the Fed. Spit Fires, and the Rem Sub Sonic. The fed's don't feed at all. And the Rem's don't have enough punch to cycle the slide. But it shoots great groups. I have done some work to the front sight to make it better to see in the shadows at the range. FYI, The Mags have a beveled bottom plate that only fit the Kimber mag well. But if your gun doesn't have the S/A mag well, Your good to go. See what the others said. www.ar15.com/forums/topic.html?b=5&f=49&t=37434 And then there is this one. Read both of them. www.ar15.com/forums/topic.html?b=5&f=49&t=38021 |
| I looked at a lot of them before I got my Kimber kit. And didn't find any of them that do the last shot hold open. And Yes, mine doesn't like the Fed. Spit Fire. But shoots just about any other ammo out there. With that said, Keep in mind not every 22 pistol will shoot every ammo on the market. So if you buy one, Just go and get your self a few types of ammo and have fun shooting it. The gun will tell you what you'll need to get in the future. Just stay with the High Velocity stuff. |
IIRC the advantage arms kits do lock the slide open. |
| I have a Kimber kit,it seems to be made very well but I am haveing feed issues,it is acting like a single shot, and the accuracy range I was not impressed with,it shot big patterns around 8 inches at 25 yrds,I wanted to take it hunting so to see if it was me I got out my Ruger MKII Goverment 6 and 7/8 bull barrel and at that distance shot20 rnds with in around a 2 inche group, needless to say I took the Ruger coon hunting that weekend, my thoughts are if you just want to shoot you 1911 cheaper and easier get one,I love it for that, but if you want more accurate shooting you can get a used Ruger MKII for less then the conversion, thats my 2 cents worth |

IABountyHunter: That kit needs to go to Kimber, with a target to prove what its doing. Mine shots same hole groups of a rest at 25 yards. Off hand I cann't say that, But then its me doing the "Dog Sh*t shake" I would be talking to Kimber About the feeding thing also. Maybe try some other AMMO. |

www.advantagearms.com/1911conversion_kit.html According to their website, they now lock open. I don't know if that's a new development or not. |

webtaz99: Because I have a TRP and with all the trigger and other work I have had done to it. Its great fun shooting 22 LR from it. Plus its good practice and you can shoot 10 rounds of 22 for about the price of 1 rnd of 45. And before anyone says I should shoot more 45 since I don't CCW a 22. Well I do, I shoot about 250 rnds a week of 45 acp. And yes, my ammo bill is insane. But it keeps me out of the bars and strip clubs. P.S. I also own 4 other 22 pistols also, Plus the 22 conversion. And my S/A TRP is the best of all of the 22's |

I bought a used Kimber conversion kit and I really like it. My girlfriend likes it because it does not have the recoil of the .45 ACP and I like it because ammo is cheap. I've tried a few different brands of ammunition and it likes CCI Mini-Mags the best. Brass is thrown up and clear with a good amount of force. The manual even specifically states not to use Federal ammunition. Also I would avoid the non-copper washed bullets because the lubricant and bare lead builds up in the chamber and results in stuck casings after 100-150ish rounds. I also read on the Kimber website that the .22 conversion kit does not lock back on the last round because the slide is aluminum and the slidestop would batter the slide catch notch and eventually wear it away. |
because of the ergonomics, I have not yet seen a 1911 pistol in .22 that was under 300.00. I want to shoot my pistol as much as possible, .22 converstion will make sure I can afford to shoot it every weekend. plus when I go hiking I can carry my pistol in .45 and in .22. instead of carrying two pistols. I like to plink a few round in the back country, and somtimes a gray squirrel.

I had a chancee to look at one of Advantage Arms 22 kits for the 1911 today. Very nice, a steel frame with a true last shot hold open. I aslo talked the Ken at Advantage Arms on Wed. And they are going to have kits out for Springfields other line of hand guns late summer early fall. This should help them get a better foot hold in the 22 conv. kit market. I'm thinking about ordering a 1911 kit from them. And selling my Kimber kit to a shooting friend. We'll see. |

OH boy. Here's my experience with conversions/ practice ideas, and some questions/comments. Got a AA Glock 17 conversion at 05 SHOT and loved it- for a while. It isn't the most accurate tool, but allows me to practice with my full sized G17 and same trigger. After some testing, the cheap Rem Gold HPs seemed to print a 4-5 in group at 20 yds. Gudenuf for practice. Then my buddy took it to the range and said it wouldn't hit the side of barn, i laughed and said he needed to practice more. Then i took it to ease my girlfriend (now wench-to-be) into some pistol practice and it shot okay. Then when i took it out for a serious workout a few weeks later, it was keyholing at 10 FEET. Looked down the barrel to find a black hole about 2/3 the way down the tube and heavy leading out the muzzle- problem. They quickly replaced the barrel. Then i took it out again a few weeks later and shot some Rem. Tbolts, within 50 rounds - keyholing again. Sent it back for another (free) barrel. Now i'm asking for 2 barrels at a time to have one to shoot all the time; i shoot about 1000 rnds a week, mostly 22. They told me not to shoot any more Tbolts, something about not enough/too much lube from Rem. So i shoot about 300 rounds of something else one day in about 30 min. and AGAIN start to see leading. They refunded my money for conversion & extra mags. They said they never had that problem before. It was supposed to lock open, but didn't always. Ciener- no i'm looking into another conversion, but no lockback. Also would like to shoot 22 in my AR for inexpensive practice- seeking opinions.....! 22/45- i now shoot my 22/45 most of the week. i got into Bullseye at NRA monday night leagues (before football games). It is a hoot. Topped with a Leupold Gilmore 1 MOA and filled with the right ammo, my 5.? inch used s/s shoots 1.5 inches at 50 yds from a bag. But it isn't very much like my work G17. SO... enter the mosquito: i love sigs (& H&Ks). Carried them in the Navy and owned one since. But the size is 90% and they are still not the G17 frame, trigger, etc. i carry for work or for Bullseye. I think you 1911 guys have more options then my G17. I'm not too fond of either, but it's a personal thing. Interesting thread, thanks for input. nate |
