I'm pretty much sure I'm going to put a RIA on layaway at my local gun store, I just can't decide whether to get a full size or compact.  I'm a new shooter and have only shot a .45 once about 3 years ago, so I'm concerned with recoil.  Anyone have a compact?  If so, I'd be interested in what you guys think.

Some people bash RIA because they are cheap guns and cheap guns are more prone to defects and reliability issues. Some people bash compacts because they are less reliable (even completely unreliable by design). The only compact I will (ever) trust my life to cost more than a half dozen RIAs, and I have tried with great disappointment compacts that cost 3 RIAs.

I see no earthly reason for anybody to ger a RIA compact other than they want to press their luck against the odds that it won't be a nightmare.

If you want a compact for carry, pay for it now (or you will PAY for it later). If you want to try your odds on a so-called bargain and you don't have any ambitions to use this for self defense, then try their full size.

Regardless, it makes much more sense to Just get the Springfield GI for the money vs. quality differences.

Cougar7464,

To add, if you want a carry piece, then favor the compact.

On the other hand, if money is tight and you want more of a range pistol, favor the standard length model.  The compacts are a handful for even seasoned 1911 shooters.

Now having said that, if you can pony up a little more money, the RAI tend to be on the very low end, if even acceptable, pistols.  For what little additional money is involved, stepping up to a SA mil spec pistol would be a wisher choice is you plan on putting many thousands of round through the pistol.

Bottom line is spend what money you can, and if you live in the Denver area and get a pistol with problem, we can get together and make the pistol right at rain!!!!

I couldn't have said it better myself.

Strangely enough, there seems to have been quite a few RIA fans touting how good the pistol is on the 1st page of the forum.   I just hope they don't find out the hard way which end of the quality spectrum the RIAs are.
