I have to say that I am going to be buying a 1911 70's series. I wanted to know, the price I can be expected to pay for a New Colt Version, off the shelf, with nothing extra added as of yet.

I was also wondering, before making my purchase, does the Defender plus model recoil alot stronger than the normal 70's version, or not?

Is the 1991 series another fine pistol, and what is the difference between the 70's series and the modern 1991 series?

Thank you for your help!

Any advice would be helpful. I am timid to ask questions here as it is, but advice is needed.

I think you ought to pay about $700 for a blued Series 70 pistol. The Defender will recoil more, because it is a compact pistol, and the difference between Series 70 and Series 80 is explained best in a thread tacked at the top of this forum.

On average I see them from the high 700s to the mid 800s.  Still worth it, to me.

I bought a Series 70 new-made one for $899+tax the other week. Mine is in stainless, however, a bit more expensive than the blued version.

I haven't changed a single thing on it. I've put about 200 rounds through it so far with a variety of mags (mostly USGI, some Mec-Gars (7 and 8 rounders), and a Wilson 47D), and fed it some different loads (Federal expanding point +P's, Speer Gold Dots, Winchester Walmart White Box, UMC Bulk ball)...

No problems, no hiccups, no issues whatsoever. Admittidly 200 rounds isn't exactily a lot, so I'll be shooting it some more and keeping a tally on it.

My only planned changes so far are to swap out the extractor with a C&S one (for my own peace of mind), and drop in a longer trigger (big hands, big fingers..short triggers aren't great for me)

Once I fit the extractor to it though, I'll probably leave it out, and let it run as-is until (if) the current extractor fails.

I see a trigger job in it's future and maybe a mild dehorning, but that'll be about it...it works great for me as-is.

Edited - Commander/Defender models may recoil a little more, due to less mass on the slide.

Series 70 and Series 80/1991 pistols..the differences are tacked up above in the forum...some people (me included) don't like S80-type actions, but functionally, there's no difference.
