full size or commander?

my 2 1911s that would fit your criteria and would recommend--almost 1000 rnds btw the 2 (by me, i'm the 2nd owner of both), no problems whatsoever

highly recommend both, for the edge, i'd opt for the SW

For carry, I would go with a Kimber or a Springfield.  Not familiar with the Smith.

For home defense, I would go with an Remington 870 Police Magnum loaded with #2 or #4  2 3/4" shells or #6 3" magnums.  I know that's not what you asked but if you want reliability, that's your gun.

Full-size or dedicated CCW?

If you are looking for a dedicated CCW, keep the barrel at 4" or longer or you risk reliability problems. The 1911 was not designed to be chopped down that far.

Any of the Kimber Pro series pistols.  Alloy frames make them a joy to carry.  My Pro Carry II is very accurate and after 1600 rnds down range NO problems (internal extractor) other than mags. Switched to Wilson 47D's and no more mag problems!!

Kimber Pro Carry with an internal extractor. Could probably get one new for $650 if you looked hard.
