| I know this has probably been done before but here goes. I want a basic range gun so Im thinking of a P2 with 1.5 inch guarantee or a SA Professional. I know one has fixed sight and one has adjustable. But I figure I can get away with either since its not a bullsye gun. Fixed I can work a load for POI-POA and carry it if I want. On the P2 I can get the sight melted and carry it. For real world pricing I figure theres not much difference. Only thing I can trade in a couple of Colts towards a Professional at a nearby dealer so that may end up factoring into it, I dont know yet. Anyway which one do you guys think. I cant decide I dont know anyone that owns either. |

well, I own a Baer and a SA Loaded....and based on the customer service/warranty work I have received from both companies, I also vote SA. The Baer is tighter and more finely finished, but doesn't shoot any better/accurately/more reliably than the SA....I could have bought 3 SAs for the same money I put into the Baer. (but then again, I can honestly say that I have a Baer) |
| Hey SGB hows that thing shoot? Im wanting nice tight groups thats why Im considering the 1.5" if I get the Baer. Colt45guy I have Loaded's, two right now Im wanting high end so I dont have to ship it off. Theyre nice for the price but by the time I get checkering done and tighten them up, trigger job etc. I might as well buy something high end. |

FBI requirement for the Pro was..........conducted with Remington 230 gr. Golden Saber ammunition and that the maximum acceptable accuracy would be 1.5" at 25 yards for three consective 10-shot groups fired from a Ransom Rest. Golden Saber is an excellent performer in the FBI's terminal ballistic protocol; however, Federal Match it is not. |
Nice pic SGB. How do you like those VZ Operators? Have a set myself, best grip to date IMO. |

The Pro is a full custom gun, with price tag to match. The Baer is a semi-custom gun, with a lower price tag. If you have the $$$, get the Pro (full custom, bragging rights, exlusivity, etc). If you don't want to spend quite that much, get the Baer. I've been very happy with mine. Flawless functioning, itsy bitsy groups. Or, buy a base model Springfield or Colt new series 70 and send to Yo-Bo. |
thanks these Operators a more aggressive than the standard Operators and I love them. I have them on my Warrior as well. |

The Baer PII is a hell of a lot of gun in that price range, possibly the best value in a sub-$2000 semi-custom. I have been 100% satisfied with mine, and if given the chance to buy it again, would do it without hesitation. Then again, the Baers appeal to me more than other semi-customs. On the other hand, the Pro is a full custom, albeit by relatively unknown smiths. That said, I've spent some time with Jason Chambliss, one of two American Pistolsmith Guild members who are employed by the Custom Shop. He does great work and I would love to own one of his guns. |

Pro, with no question in my mind. I would never own a pistol built as tight as a Baer. I handled a few more two weeks ago. Every one of them was so tight I thought the safety was on when I went to rack the slide. To me building them that tight is just a gimmick. |
| I don't think the Pro is equal to the Baer when you consider the accuracy guarantee and sights...by that I mean it is not built as a target pistol and the Baer is. IMO you are comparing high-level apples and oranges. I have a couple of extremely accurate match pistols, so I would grab either the Pro or a Baer TRS with the "Bear Coat" and no accuracy guarantee...then you would be comparing guns equally. |

My .02 cents as follows: Many of those who complain about too-tight Baers have never owned one, nor shot one long term. For many years I avoided Baers based on "errornet" info. I finally bought one after talking to a Baer owner and have been very pleased with it. Just added a 2nd Baer to my stable. Rock River, Pros, Baers, etc are all tight when new. No big deal. They are all built right and the intial tightness makes for long-term solid lockup w/o slop. This is the result of starting with oversized slides and frames, yet they are straight, parallel and square due to the use of CNC and tighter tolerances. The old way of peening/squeezing is not nearly as good, but it was the technology available at the time. Baers are tight when new, after 1k rounds they are grease on glass smooth and solid, yet not tight. My P2 1.5 has malfunctioned once in over 2k rounds on a reloaded cartridge that wouldn't pass a SAAMI spec case gauge. I use it on duty every day and sits in my 6280 as I write this. My SVI was very tight when new, as much as the Baer. Somewhere between 25k and 50k rounds through it, still bank-vault solid and smooth with no play. I doubt Clint Smith thinks Baers are a gimmick. | Right now the shop is dead set on getting $2395 for the Pro. But it is nice and I have been pretty happy with the company. Im going to have to sell my Colts outright and try to find one elsewhere. Because Im not going to pay fullboat retail for anything. I think more than anything I just needed to know if the SA is really worth that much. |
+1 I picked my PRO up for $1049............ of corse they didn't know what they had and I did but my step son just picked up a lnib Les Baer TRS for $1400.Keep the colts and start bargin shopping. |
Don't worry about buying new. It's only new until the first round goes down the pipe anyway, then it becomes a used gun just like all the rest. |
