Hey guys, I'm thinking about getting a new 1911.  What should I look at for under $700?  I want a quality piece that I can have for years to come that will be reliable, but I can't afford to spend 1 or 2 grand like some of you lucky ones...

Any help is appreciated!

Be patient in your search.
Buy used and if you some research you can find a nice Kimber Series I
or a Colt series 70.

Those will both be good guns which you can own for years.
Both will also be guns you can customize as time and finances allow.

Some people are very happy with SA

I have one of the Gunsite 1911's by SA (Millineum edition)

For a custom pistol I am not very happy.  Not the tightest fit to say the least.

Also the SA loaded is a good deal for the price BUT its not something you will own for a long time.
1)  Not the tightest fits in the world
2)  I would avoid it same reason as I would not get a brand new Colt or Kimber.  Too many mim parts.

Under $700

I have a SA loaded and a G.I. and they have both been great pistols. They will be around my house for a long time to come and I plan on possibly getting another one.
