Well I just got my first real job out of college so I'm going to reward myself with the best 1911 money can buy. I would like a 3-4.5" barrel for CCW that is my only standard. Can you guys give me some ideas. Currently I'm using a Kimber Ultra Raptor for my CCW, but want to trade up. thanks |

As for factory guns, what you have is pretty good. You can always get a semi-custom Wilson, Brown, Baer or Nighthawk and be another step up. Or, you could buy a Caspian slide and frame and spend about $800 at Midway getting the best of all the components you want and send it all off to be built to your individual specs. Don't compromise anything. Get the exact safety, sights and grips that make you happy. At the moment, I am having this exact thing done. I also have a Springfield Champion that I am having totally rebuilt with exactly what I want and nothing more or less. If you go this route, you really do need to know what works for you. Personally, I like the Brown grip safety and thumb safety (non-ambi). I like smooth front straps, night sights with contrasting colors (Wilson makes these), short guide rods, VZ grips and flat mainspring housings. On the full size, I have slanted colt style serrations front and rear, S&A magwell and Gunkote over park. On the Champion, I had a bobtail treatment done, bull barrel, reverse plug and done in a hard chrome lower with T-black upper. Each component had its reason. Sit down and plot out exactly what you want and how you're going to use it and configure it exactly how you like. |

If money were no object I'd look at the Brown Cobra Carry or Nighthawk's version of the same. I really like the bobtail guns. The biggest advantage to Nighthawk is that they will build exactly what you want, but they will offer advice when needed. I've handled a few pistols from Nighthawk and their CCO size pistol is amazing. |
Sorry AJ... don't tell Ted. I didn't know it was a secret. I won't say anything else. |
