Lately (once again) there seems to be some discussion as to the function/reliability of Wilson 47D mags. I shoot well over 20,000 rounds each year and ONLY use 47Ds. I have recently seen complaints as to the reliability of the 47Ds. I have NEVER experienced a problem of ANY kind with these mags and continue to recommend them. What gives folks?

I don't know what to tell you but they didn't function completely reliably for me.  They worked probably 99% of the time.  Yeah, I know

Anyway, I went back to the original Colt 7 rounders.  Work like clockwork.

FWIW, my piece is not bone stock.  It was smithed over by a *very* reputable smith.

Not bad.

True.  But, I carried this for awhile and it just made me a bit leery when I would have a malfunction once in a blue moon on the range.  Very, very rare I admit.

YMMV

Why am I the only one that has NEVER had a problem with Wilson 47Ds. I mean ZERO problems over hundreds of thousands of rounds. Once again the only mags I use and buy, period. Let's see, 2 Wilson CQBs, 2 Wilson Protectors, 2 Yost-Bonitz 1 * Elites, One custom original Series 70 Colt worked on by Roger at STI, 2 ADCO/RRAs, One John Jardine Valtro, One Kimber Warrior, etc. etc. etc.
I must be the only one that has no problems. Seems strange doesn't it?
I will say this in the nicest way possible, but the Wilson 47Ds are the benchmark for 1911 mags. Check the group buy for Wilson mags that endeed 9/30. The overwhelming orders were for the 47Ds.

Sounds like you have some nice kit there.  I definitely am jealous.  I, too, have a YoBo Colt and have posted pics elsewhere on the forum.  While I will admit to having probably less than 10 issues with the 47D's in all my use, those few times did give me pause.  (Really, it was probably better than 99% up time on those.)

I will agree that the 47D is largely one hell of a mag, and a damn sight better than most out there.  I prefer them for the range but I don't carry them anymore.  In fact, I don't carry the 1911 anymore. I'm a heathen I know but that YoBo stuff is just too nice to beat up, IMO, as I'd like to hand it down to the kids.  I need to get a beater 1911 for carry.  Won't tell you what I carry now.

I am a recent, semi, convert to the 47D.  I've been using CMC mags for years with only a couple issues that I isolated to 2 mags.  I stayed away from the 47D mags for a long time mainly due to finances and wanting to shoot IPSC as much as possible, needed money for lead.

Things are a little different now and I've been using some 47D's for about 2 months.  They have been great.  However, I've had issues with the Wilson mags made for the officer size guns.  They haven't worked well in a Colt CCO or a Springfield Ultra Compact.

I've not heard the complaints on 47d mags, but I DON'T use the shorter Wilson mags.

My Wilson's are very reliable...and old.

Several years back, when they failed to lock the slide back, then last round FTFeed. I replaced the springs and followers and back to 100%. Failing to lock the slide back was the warning. hrough
DOCGUN: Do you have feel for that?

I've also had good reliability with CMC shooting star mags. I'd say about the same with properly made ammo. What I did find is that the Wilson did function 100% with SWC ammo that was way too short(very short)...mistake reloading.hock.gif That ammo choked the Shooting Star mags.
The Shooting Star will handle longer ammo than my Wilsons. And mine are over 10 years old now. One is 15 I think.

I had problems with 6 47Ds failing to lock the slide back on 4 different guns.  These are old mags with several thousand rounds through them, and granted they would function fine if the spring was replaced/updated, I'm not too confident of the polymer follower.

I had problems with 47D's.  The problem was resolved by fixing the weapon, however.

Have a SA "loaded" that would choke on the last round in the mag.  The round would not eject fully and lock up in the slide...  This failure ONLY occured when I used Wilson 47D's, and would NEVER happen when using Mec-Gars.

Changed the extractor to a Wilson bulletproof, changed out the recoil spring to a 18# wilson, and now the gun is 100% reliable.

I am not saying it was the Wilson mag at fault - but without question the Wilson's proved to be less forgiving... because the problem only presented itself when using the 47D's.

And that's a fact.  That being said.... when I buy more mags, they will be Wilson 47D's.

I'm estimating about 3,000 rounds through a single mag before the springs might need changing.

Sounds about right, maybe more. You can get rebuild kits at Midway that includes a spring and follower for about $9. Remember if anything breaks (feed lips, etc.) Wilson has a lifetime warranty.

I too had the failure to lock back with mine, but it was less then 3000 rounds. I took them apart and stretched the springs a little and I haven't had the problem since.

Are these Wilson's the 7rd. or the 8rd.?

Mine were 8.

Call me crazy but I prefer 7 round magazines in JMB's creation.
