I have 2 1911's. One is a Colt Gold Cup Trophy Match and the other a Kimber Stainless 2. My question is: I'm wanting to make one more combat oriented. My upgrades I'm planning on are Novak night sights and Wilson 47d 7round mags. Would this be a better candidate due to the internal extractor? Because of the looser fitting tolerances? I don't want to trash a target gun, but I want something I can rely on. I shoot much better with it than with my Kimber thus I feel much more comfortable with it. Another question: Is there a durable coating I can have put on over the blueing?

P.S. It is a Series 80 colt and by combat oriented I mean tactical, I was just afraid to use that word.

Good luck putting Novaks on a Gold Cup.  The rear sight has a long cut, and if the slide is machined for a Novak, which can actually be done, you will have a trough, for lack of a better word, in front of the rear sight.

Now, as far as extractors and tolerances go, let me ask you this.  Is your Kimerb a serisII?  If so, is it not reliable?  Which of the two guns is looser?

Regardless of the answers, pick the most reliable of the two, and have at it.  With the Kimber, if it has fixed sights, retrofitting to Novaks is a breeze.  Quite honestly, though I'm a Colt fan, Gold Cups are notoriously sloppy, while Kimbers are usually fairly tight and accurate.  I would not worry about trashing a target gun, since the Gold Cup is anything but a target gun.

Anyway, if you plan on doing your own coating, doing it over bluing is inviting poor results.  At the very least the gun should be abrasive blasted and degreased well.  Good luck.
