| Thinking about buying this old colt and need some help with putting a value and dating it. The owners says his grandfather brought it back from Germany in WWII but there are no us markings or serial numbers. Any help would be appreciated. |

All Colt pistols had serial numbers, especially all USGI 1911 series .45 autos no matter who made them.
If there are no numbers on the frame they were removed, which means simple possession is a Federal FELONY CRIME. Federal and most State laws are that any firearm that originally had a serial number that has been removed, defaced, or altered is a felony crime. Some older .22 rifles and shotguns had no serial numbers. Since the 12968 Gun Control Act ALL firearms made since must have a unique serial number. ALL USGI firearms had serial numbers and all Colt pistols made since 1836 had serial numbers. If there are no numbers they were removed, thus...Felony crime just to possess. The only options with a 1911 with no serial number are: 1. Don't buy it. Walk away FAST. 2. Strip it of all parts and destroy the frame. 3. Apply to the BATF to have a new serial number assigned so a FFL Gunsmith can stamp the new number on the frame. This will destroy any collector value. Stupid move.....Buy a clearly illegal gun and think that if you get caught a Federal or State prosecutor will not put you in jail. |

The serial number would be on the other side of the frame which is. Not shown in the pictures. If there is no serial number don't even think of buying it. Most ( except very late ww1) 1911's had the us property stamp on the left side of the dust cover and this was frequently removed on bring backs. Unless it has a number and us prop marking on the other side I would not
Bother at all. |
